December 4, 1974

A Belgian draft horse was fitted with new shoes this week by Ted Hawk as the owner, Lloyd Vander Heiden stood by. Hawk is one of the last blacksmiths to shoe horses in Northeastern Wisconsin.

 

Jean Lang, Institute of Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin, stated that Americans have tamed the continent and have beaten back much of the animal life. The eagle populations have dropped, packs of wolves have retreated to Canada. But the coyote is still hanging on and even expanding its range.

Funeral services were conducted for Donald W. Kramer, a 40-year-old, Kaukauna man who was struck by and apparent stray bullet which riding in a van on a country road in Oconto County. 

Mrs. Dennis Wittman and her twin sons will receive two Christmas stockings as a gift from the Kaukauna Community Hospital Auxiliary. The gifts are presented to all babies born there in December.

 

December 11, 1974

Four new firemen, to replace four who will be retiring, have been hired by Kaukauna. Chief Theodore said that Leon Van Toll and Robert Nack Jr., have begun training at this time. Joining the department on January 2 will be Scott Robach and Keith Knorr. The four firemen who will be retiring are John Niesz, Wibert Kobussen, Stanley Kramer and Florian Diedrich.

Kaukauna’s Frank Bouressa and Greg Helf were two of six gridders that have been named to the United Press International All-team football team.

 

December 18, 1974

The Kaukauna aldermen approved school expenditures of $4,621,869 after cutting $57,787 from the budget presented by the school board. 

 

The Kaukauna’s Ghostettes won their opening non-conference game 50-30 over Two Rivers last Thursday in Kaukauna. Karen Wyngaard paced the Ghostettes, scoring 20 points. Deb Meehl was second in scoring with 11 points.

Linda Nushart, Glenview Avenue. crossed her fingers this week. She has good reason as she’ll celebrate her 13th birthday today, Friday the 13th.

It finally happened the old railroad buildings have finally been demolished and Board of Public Works Chairman James McDaniel referred to the area looking like the ruins of Rome.

 

December 20, 1974

Mayor Robert LaPlante plans to meet with all department heads twice a month in the future to prevent differences in opinions from coming to the council floor. Those differences particularly between the mayor and that of the city engineer Robert Natrop.

 

December 24, 1974

Private First-Class Robert G. Simons, 21 of Kaukauna, died on December 19 as result of and auto-pedestrian accident in Germany. He was struck by a privately owned vehicle as he crossed a road.

Bart Starr, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers in the glory years of the 1960’s, was named coach and general manager of the Packers this week. Starr, 41, will succeed Dan Devine who resigned at the end of the season to accept the head coaching position at the University of Notre Dame.

Karen Newhouse, Kaukauna, was the winner of the Voice of Democracy. She was presented a trophy designating her outstanding spokesman for democracy in her community. Karen center is pictured with Tom Wulterkens, Voice of Democracy chairman for the Kaukauna VFW and Mrs. Roy Grissman, auxiliary chairman.

December 2, 1964

For the third time in a single year, the walls of the new Kaukauna high school gymnasium reverberated to the rhythmic chant from Galloping Ghost partisans of “we want a hundred”. While time did not permit the Kaukauna basketball players to grant that request by the rooters the Ghost nevertheless managed to set another new KHS basketball scoring record as they rolled over the Cardinals of L.P. Goodrich high school of Fond du Lac by a lop-sided 98-54 margin. 

Vince Lombardi, coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers, will be the 1965 Honorary American Cancer Society Crusade Chairman of the Wisconsin Division; it was announced this week by the president of the Cancer Society. 


December 4, 1964

Bruce "Bucky" Bay, a 1961 graduate of Kaukauna High School and presently a senior at the Wisconsin State University of Stevens Point has again earned a berth in the WSU all-conference football team. He was also named Stevens Point gridders' most valuable player for the 1964 season.  


A Kaukauna hunter traveled 140 miles north but found not one deer – then he sighted one practically in his own backyard at a Thanksgiving gathering. Ralph Verbockel said he got up from the table and spotted a ten-point buck walking through the garden.     


December 9, 1964

C. J. Hansen, publisher of the Kaukauna Times, was a special guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Kaukauna High School Alumni Association. Mr. Hansen explained the procedures of setting the type and proofreading of the copy for the publishing of the annual issue of the Alumni news.

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghost cagers got off to a roaring start in the mid-Eastern conference wars Friday night as they ran over the Purple Raiders of Two Rivers 89-70.  Mike Andrews set the pace scoring 32 points.


December 11, 1964



Three KHS graduates with the class of 1964 are now students at the College of Cosmetology at Appleton. They are Miss Mary Ann Woldt, Miss Sharon Noie, and Miss Pamela Specht. 

The hilarious Harlem Stars are coming to Kaukauna Tuesday night. Squaring off against the Stars will be the Kaukauna Athletic club quintet, made up of such top area cagers as Jim Rausch, Bill Simon, Tom Geurts, Mike Rohe, Pat Casperson, Gary Verstegen, Mike Pendleton and Ken Diedrick.


December 16, 1964

Flooding operations for Kaukauna's three ice rinks got underway this week. The rinks will be located at the Riverside Park, Strassburg Park and the Tenth Street ball field. The rinks will be lit during the evening and warm-up sheds are available at each site.


December 18, 1964

A number of, city employed, personnel were granted a 3% increase in salary from 1965 through the actions of the city financial committee and adopted by the common Council Tuesday night.  


December 22, 1964

A family of bears and a buck were the hunting trophies brought back by Curtis Gerow of Kaukauna and his party of hunters The bear was 300 pounds along with two cubs. Curt also shot the 180-pound eight-point buck. Others in the group besides Curt were Keith, Francis and Ray Gerow, Floyd Van Asten, Dick Fingers and Jerry Hedthe.


A record buck harvest for Wisconsin was set in 1964 when hunters bagged 72,447 bucks. Another 19,785 antler less deer were selectively taken under the variable quota permit for a total harvest of 92,232 animals.


Fire believed to have originated from a faulty heater unit Monday morning virtually destroyed the Glenn Meyerhofer residence on W. 7th St. according to report from the Kaukauna fire chief William Haupt.  


December 24, 1964

To call him the court jester is an incomplete expletive. He is The Court Jester. The scene of his frolics is not a King's court but the basketball floor. It is the unique facet of Meadowlark Lemon that he is able to blend the gift of gesturing with the talents of a fine athlete.


December 29, 1964

The Powers basketball team of Kaukauna emerged as the champions of the first holiday basketball tournament Sunday evening as they edged to an 86-82 decision over Butch’s of Kimberly. 

The Kaukauna Recreation Department sponsored class performed. Pictured are Sue Glenski, Shannon Reko, Peggy Gertz, Mary Huss, Ann Walsh, Kathy Coonen, Liz Peters and Lisa Van Boxtel of the tots’ preschool youngsters.
