Well it’s
time to fire up the old “Time
Machine Chair” and travel
back in time to April of 1967.
For
today’s trip, Don Feldkamp will be
sitting in the front seat operating the Time Machine. Now the big wheel is
spinning, the years are clicking back and in no time, we are back on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue.

April 5, 1967
Gilbert Anderson won reelection to the post of
Mayor of Kaukauna by a total of 2470 to 1371 votes over challenger Clarence
Sullivan.
This year’s record 18 victories scored by the
Kaukauna high school basketball team brought back memories to Ghost fans of the
team that held the previous record, the 1940-41 KHS team. The 1940-41 team had
15 straight victories during the season and won the Western Division of
Northeastern Wisconsin Conference.
The volleyball season continues for the Kaukauna
high school as they won the W.I.A.A. Regional meet on Thursday with a play-off
victory over Appleton high school by a 15-8 margin.
April 7, 1967
Purple Martins, social birds that live in many
“apartment houses” in Kaukauna yards are starting to return for the season
about two weeks ahead of schedule. George R. Greenwood, Sixth Street reports
seeing the first returnees to his martin houses at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The birds will leave the first week in August.
The Kaukauna high school baseball team will
open their 1967 diamond season the Tuesday against Fond du Lac here. The ghosts,
under new head coach Dave Hash, will be attempting to snap a nine-game losing
streak and their first game against the Cardinals. Returning for the Ghosts
this year is senior Tom Van De Hey, who led the Ghosts in hitting and was
selected the most valuable player. Other senior letterman includes two
left-handed pitchers, Tom Vils and John Jansen: catcher Don Heinz and second
baseman Scott Lewandowski.
April 12, 1967
Leo H. Schmalz, President of the
Wisconsin Elks Association and member of the Kaukauna Lodge No. 962, will be
honored for his 35 years in the organization at a dinner dance this Saturday at
the Elks club.
The Kaukauna Savings and Loan Association
celebrated its 80th anniversary this week and directors at the same time paid a
tribute to Leo H. Schmaltz who has been its secretary and manager since 1942.
April 19, 1967
Electric service was interrupted in an area of
Kaukauna and Little Chute for a time early Tuesday morning when a car driven by
Melvin W. Powers of Shiocton collided with a utility pole on Taylor street and
knocked it over. Power was shut down for about two hours. Powers and two
companions were taken to the Kaukauna Community Hospital where they were
reported as good, according to Dr. Simon Cherkasky.

Two students from Kaukauna high school, George
Haas and Joseph McCarthy, were “A” winners in a recent District Forensic
Contest held at the campus of the Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh, and are
eligible for participation in the state meet to be held April 29 in
Madison.
The Kaukauna High School track team held their
first competition of the spring on Thursday at the Doty Bayorgeon Recreation
area track. Coach Ken Roloff's side emerged the winner over coach Ken Smith’s
team by a 67–43 score. Mike Lehman was a double winner at the meet scoring wins
in the high and low hurdles. Steve Therriault was the double winner with wins
in the 100-yard dash in the 440-yard dash. Kevin Coleman copped the mile run
and Sean Rohan copped the 880-yard run. Bernard Van Zeeland was the winner of
the 220-yard dash. Bill Verhagen took the shot-put event and Marty Van Zeeland
was the winner in the discus. Head coach Ron Margelofsky said “I was very
pleased with the showing the team put into the events.”
THE KAUKAUNA HIGH school volleyball team finished second in
the State Tournament on Saturday. They were eliminated by Antigo in a playoff
after the two teams tied. In the front row left to right are: Randy Andrews,
Mel Biersteker, Bill Mathis, Don Heinz and Mike Grogan. Second row are: Ken
Kappell, Fred Cazzola, Gary Heindel, Jeff School, Gary Feller and Coach Dave
Hash. Third row are: Bill Derricks, Mike Flanagan, Mike Kelly and Pat Blenke.
April 26, 1967
A perfectly executed suicide squeeze, the most
beautiful and dangerous play in baseball, in the last half of the seventh
inning brought Kaukauna victory after 11 straight losses, 6-5 over Stockbridge
in a game played Monday afternoon at the Dodge Street diamond. With one out,
Tom Van De Hey rested on third base. On the first pitch Van De Hey broke for
the plate while the batter, Ken Kappell, laid down a perfect bunt. By the time
the pitcher picked up the ball Van De Hey had crossed the plate. The game was
over and Kaukauna had the taste of victory for the first time in two
years.
About 1000 people participated in the
dedication rites of the new Bethany Lutheran Church Kaukauna. Joining the
members of the congregation in the day's events were many friends from Kaukauna
and numerous other communities from throughout the state. The Rev. Harold
Brauer, executive secretary of the North Wisconsin District the Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod, was a guest at the afternoon service. The opening
ceremonies were conducted by Rev. Ernest Bartels, pastor of the church.
Miss Sarah Berens, Kaukauna, was named
one of the two girls selected by the men of the Sigma Pi Fraternity at
WSU-Oshkosh to reign on the Sweetheart Court for the Orchid Ball which was held
Saturday, April 22. Miss Berens will also be part of the prom court on
Saturday, April 29, since her escort was elected Senior class representative.
Sarah is a first semester senior at the University, majoring in lower
elementary. Sarah is a 1963 KHS graduate.
April 28, 1967
King Bob DeCoster and Queen Maureen Collins
will reign over the British scene at KHS when the juniors present their 1967
prom. Serving as members of the royal court will be senior representatives Don
Bice and Lin Cherkasky and sophomore representatives Pat Kehoe and Sally Pitz.
Six former Kaukauna sports greats will be
inducted into the first Kaukauna Hall of Fame at the KHS all sports banquet
tomorrow evening in the high school commons and auditorium. Inducted at the
banquet will be Richard “Red” Smith, class of 1922: Glen Miller, class of 1925:
Elmer Ott, class of 1923: Kurt Beyer, class of 1925: Harold “Red” Peters, class
of 1925 and post-humously, the late Paul Little, Kaukauna high school coach
between 1925 and 1945.
