August 4, 1965
Funeral services were
held Tuesday morning for Theodore H. Boebel, 71, superintendent of Kaukauna
schools for 16 years, from 1944 to 1960. Death came at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at
Boebel's home, 222 W. 5th Street.
Francis “Stack” Heesakker won the President's
Cup Tournament at the Fox Valley Golf Club Saturday when he beat Jerry Heiting
by one stroke on the first hole of the sudden death after both shot scores of
64.
DeDe's Diplomats participated in the twirling
roundup on Sunday at the Eagles ballroom in Kenosha. They were awarded three
first place team trophies.
Mike Keberlein, 13, has been a
southside Times carrier for two years. Mike will be in the eighth grade at St.
Mary’s this fall.
Charles Luehring, 13, has been a Times
carrier on the north side of Kaukauna since the beginning of the year. He will
be in the eighth grade at Trinity Lutheran School this fall.
Terry Kobin, 14, has been a northside Kaukauna
carrier with the Times for one year. Terry will be a sophomore this fall at the
Kaukauna High school.
August 6, 1965
A new five cent stamp honoring the late Herbert
Hoover will be first placed on sale on August 10, 1965, at West Branch, Iowa,
his birthplace.
The 8,500-seat edition to the Green Bay City
Stadium has now been completed. Every seat has been sold for the Bishop’s
Charity Game on August 14 against the New York Giants assuring a record crowd
of 50,837. This is the largest crowd ever to watch a pro game in the state.
This is the fourth consecutive time in the five-year history that the preseason
charity game has been sold out.
More than 1350 people have paid admission to
the Grignon Home so far this year. This number already surpasses last year’s
one thousand for the entire season.
August 11, 1965
Miss Jane Bambery,
Grignon St., left last Saturday morning to take part in the national and
international camping program of girl scouts near Andrews, North Carolina. Miss
Bambery was one of two girls chosen from the states of Wisconsin, Indiana,
Michigan and Illinois for all state Encampment.
We read the “Times” in Vietnam waters, naval
officer writes us. Naval Lieut. James R Henry, former Kaukaunan, assigned to an
aircraft carrier in the Pacific, wrote to the Times with clipping from Lucerne
and Tokyo. You might add the waters of Vietnam to your item of where the
newspaper is being read. I enjoy reading the Times too; he writes enclosed
please find four dollars for another year’s subscription. The Times reaches me
about two months late, but it’s fun to read about classmates and friends and
the activities of the old town. Thank you so very much.
Art Lamers won the 1965 Fox
Valley Golf Club senior tournament and a sudden-death playoff with Norb “Red”
Fassbender and Earl “Sapp” Schuler. All three finished 18 holes with net 68’s.
Lamers won on the 19th hole and Fassbender took second place on the 20th.
The Manitowoc Chiefs will practice on Sunday,
August 15 in Kaukauna in preparation for the first Central States League game
of the season. Football fans are welcome to witness the practice as a preview
to the action that will follow next week. The workout will be held behind Kaukauna
High School.
August 13, 1965
The Wisconsin Public service commission
authorized the Kaukauna Bus Service Inc. on Tuesday, August 10 to operate under
that name. The commission also authorizes the concern to operate in the Village
of Combined Locks. The company is owned by Elwood and James Kobussen
co-partners. The bus service is in the communities of Kaukauna, Little Chute,
Kimberly and the village of Grand Chute.
Registration for college students at the
Outagamie County Teachers School will take place on Thursday, August 26
according to college president E. H. Gordon. Enrollment in the college classes
total 96 students to date while there are 23 youngsters enrolled in the campus
school.
Kaukauna’s first case of the dreaded Dutch elm
disease has been reported and destroyed according to Victor Luedtke,
superintendent of parks. It was located on the south side of the city. The
Board of Public Works and Park Department crews have been alerted and are
checking the city to determine if there are any other diseased trees Luedtke
added. “Samples of suspected trees will be sent to Madison to be checked”.
Residents are encouraged to check their trees.
Football Notes … The Packers play the
New York Giants this weekend in the Bishop’s Charity game. If they play as hard
against the Giants as they did against each other in last Saturday's scrimmage,
they'll do all right. This Bob Long looks like a good ball player. He just
might work his way up into the lineup although I don't know where; Caroll Dale,
Boyd Dowler and Max McGee are still looking just as good as always. Looks like
Uncle Sam wants Joe Namath, the investment of the New York Jets. When told he
could avoid the draft if he got married, Namath quipped, “I'd rather fight
those Reds in Vietnam than get married. There are too many pretty girls in this
world.”
August 18, 1965
Michael F. Brautigan, FTSA, Green Bay Rd.,
Kaukauna, received the United States Navy Commendation Medal August 10 for
meritorious service to his country. On June 30 Brautigan, 17, as a member of
the crew of the U. S. S. Piedmont was cited with saving the lives of many of
his shipmates and possibly his ship. While a fire burnt aboard, Brautigan with
complete disregard for his personal safety, carried hot ammunition from the
heart of the ship and threw it overboard. The crew battled the blaze for 14
hours and for a while, he was the only one that stood between disaster and
hope. Brautigan received severe burns to his hands and was confined to a
hospital in San Diego for period of three weeks and was reported doing well
after skin grafts were applied. He will be home on leave this week.
The National Rifle Association of America announced that John J. Bachhuber Main Avenue, Kaukauna, will be a competitor in the 1965 national high-powered rifle championships during the national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. Bachhuber and his fellow shooters, who number more than 2600 represents this nation’s top high-powered rifle shooters.

Funeral service will be
held at 10 o'clock this morning at St. Mary's church for Barbara Biersteker,
13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Biersteker, Klein Street, who died
Sunday after a 10-day illness. She was in eighth grade at St. Mary's school. In
addition to her parents, she is survived by four brothers and three sisters all
at home.
A bird owned by Gary Heindel of Kaukauna came in first in the
second pigeon race of the summer held from Sparta, the 120 mile station. There
were 37 lofts participating in the race with 13 diploma winners. Heindel’s bird
was timed at 637.17 yards per minute.
“World Peace” will be the theme tomorrow night
at 8:30, when an estimated 2000 to 5000 will gather at the lighted Kimberly
athletic field for the start of the annual outdoor Prayer Hour sponsored by the
Outagamie County deanery Holy Name Societies and Knights of Columbus councils. People
of all faiths are invited to attend the devotion.
Kaukauna will be the recipient today of the AAA
Motor Club’s award for pedestrian safety. The award is given annually to cities
in Wisconsin that have gone the entire year with no pedestrian accidents
according to the AAA news service director. Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon will receive
the award in behalf of the city in his office this afternoon.
The Fox River Valley Legion league will hold its annual baseball banquet at Van Abels this Sunday, August 29. The banquet awards will be given to division, the batting champs and the top pitchers in each division. Guest speaker will be Paul “Dizzy” Trout, the colorful ex-major league pitcher now with the Chicago White Sox public relations staff. Trout spent his entire major-league career pitching in the American League. During his big-league career, which spanned from 1939 to 1950, Dizzy registered 170 victories against 161 setbacks.

Mrs. Kathleen Davis
The 1965 KHS papyrus
was dedicated to Mrs. Kathleen Davis, Dean of Girls as KHS since 1958. “Footsteps through the Year” is the theme of
this year's annual publication. This year's book includes all sports activities
from 1964-65 school year including graduation, prom and spring sports.
The Green Bay Packers 2-0 in preseason play
travel to Dallas to meet the Cowboys at the annual Salesmanship Club game. The
Cowboys have never defeated the Packers in the four-year series that began in
1961. To date the Packers have defeated the New York Giants 44 to 7 before the
largest crowd watching pro football in Wisconsin. This was made possible by the
addition of 12,000 permanent seats. The capacity of Green Bay is now 50,837.
Last Saturday a record crowd turned out to see the Packers defeat the Chicago
Bears 31 to 14 in Milwaukee. Three-dollar tickets are still available and may
be purchased at ticket outlet locations. Tickets may also be purchased by
sending a check or money order to the Green Bay Packer ticket office.

Airman Third Class Michael L. Borg,
Kaukauna, has been selected for technical training at Lowry, AFB, Colo., as a
missile electronics specialist.
Pvt. George L. Gerrits, Kaukauna, spent a
14-day furlough with his parents. He has left for field artillery training at
Fort Sill, Okla.
Marine Pvt. Paul D. Squier, Combined Locks, has
completed individual combat training at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendle, Calif.
Airman Third Class Jerome R. Martin, Greenleaf,
has been selected for technical training at Chanute AFB, Illinois as a aircraft
weapons system specialist.
Airman Third Class Donovan L. Dain, Kaukauna,
has been assigned to Nellis AFB, Nev. for training as a transportation
specialist.
