October 1. 1965

The Shawano Indians and Kaukauna Galloping Ghost who are both looking for their first conference win will collide here Saturday in the highlight of Kaukauna's homecoming weekend. Missing from the Ghost lineup will be Tom Van De Hey and Dave O'Brien who are still recovering from knee injuries. The status of Mark Nussbaum is also doubtful. Mark suffered a shoulder separation in the New London game.

 

Pfc. Merlin E. Weyers, Kimberly, was assigned to the US Army, Vietnam on September 8 as a truck driver. Weyers is a 1961 graduate of Kimberly high school.

 

The Green Bay Packers (2-0) will meet the Chicago Bears (0-2) at Green Bay Sunday, October 3. 92 games have been played between these two great rivals and the Bears lead in the series with 52 wins to the Packers 34. There have been six ties.  Bart Starr continues his interception record with 257 attempts without one been stolen by the defense.

 

October 6, 1965 

The Galloping Ghosts found the range Saturday and belted the Shawano Indians 35-0 in their homecoming game and held the Indians to a total of 15 yards. Tom Biese, Bob Main and Richard Doering were outstanding on leading the Kaukauna defensive charge.

Union members will vote on Sunday on a new proposed contract between Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company and the union.  The announcement said that the officials of Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company and local 20 of United Papermakers and Paper workers and Local 147 of the International Brotherhood of Pulp and Sulphite and paper mill workers have announced that a tentative agreement has been reached between the unions and company for a new contract.

October 8, 1965

 

The former Service Hardware building on west Wisconsin Ave., is the scene of much remodeling converting the structure into four bowling alleys adjacent to the Bowling Bar.

Remodeling began early this week on the former Service Hardware building on W. Wisconsin Ave., converting the interior into additional bowling alleys for the adjacent Bowling Bar.  Joseph “Doty” Bayorgeon, owner of the two buildings, said the new construction will include four alleys and a snack bar.  Both buildings were built in 1945, following a fire in November 1944 that burnt out the previous structures.

 

The Green Bay Packers 3-0 will meet the San Francisco 49ers, 2-1, at Green Bay this Sunday. The Packers added number three victory by beating the Chicago Bears 23-14 Sunday. Bart Starr's continued record for passes thrown has now reached 277. The old record was 208 by Milt Plum with Cleveland in 1959 and 1960.

 

October 13. 1965


  

St. Aloysius students who studied at St. Mary's school for the first six weeks of the present term have moved, into the recently completed St. Aloysius school building. A total of 142 students took part in the move leaving St. Mary's with 531 students.


A new contract between two unions and Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company was ratified by a vote of union members. The one-year agreement includes a wage increase and fringe benefits. The contract is retroactive to August 2.

 

October 15. 1965

The 1965–66 KHS Papyrus staff members have been chosen by advisor Bernard Hupperts and co-editors June Borchardt and Michael Gondek. 49 students were selected by the staff.

 

October 20. 1965

Philip Voights, President of Local 144 International Brotherhood of Paper and Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers at Combined Locks Paper Company, announced that the union voted a strike sanction, 156-3 at a meeting last Sunday. Unresolved issues on a formal pension fund, vacation policies, wage increases and working conditions were the reason given for the strike vote.

 

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts led by the hard charging running of Bob Promer completely dominated the game and pushed over two touchdowns in the second to defeat the Menasha Bluejays 14-0.

 

October 22. 1965

Marine Lance Cpl. Dennis P. Kroes, Kaukauna, is serving in the Chu Lai sector of Vietnam with a unit of the 3rd Marine Division. His unit has participated in two major offenses of operations against the Viet Cong since arriving in Vietnam. 

 

Pfc. Roger W. Liebergen, Greenleaf, arrived in Vietnam with the Army's new 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Liebergen is a rifleman in the unit which was ordered into Vietnam on July 28 when President Lyndon Johnson announced that the U.S. troops would be increased in Vietnam.

 

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church this morning for Stephen Kappell, 18, and burial will be in the parish Cemetery. Stephen, described by friends and neighbors as a “Clean cut all American boy”, was the victim of a mysterious tragedy at Oshkosh, where he had entered the university, this fall and was a candidate for the freshman football team. Kaukauna residents were shocked to learn that the body found in Lake Winnebago last Saturday, with ankles and knees bound and a 30-pound stone tied to it were identified at the state lab as he has. He had been reported missing from his dormitory in Oshkosh since last Tuesday.

 

Marine Cpl. David J. Vantoll, Kaukauna, is currently serving in the Chu Lai sector of Vietnam as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion of the 7th Marine Regiment. The battalion has participated in two major operations against the Viet Cong since being deployed in Vietnam.

 

October 27. 1965

Police Chief Harold Engerson has issued a warning to Kaukauna young people that the police department is 100% against soaping windows. “Anyone caught in the act will have to clean the windows”, he said. “We will not tolerate any large groups wander the streets and alleys,” he said “This is where trouble starts.”

 

The highly regarded Kimberly defense was ripped apart by the powerful Kaukauna Ghosts Saturday as they collected 34 points, 434 yards and a share of third place in the mid-East standings only one week from the seasons end. Kaukauna defeated Kimberly 34-0. Bob Promer was again the man of the day. He rushed for 226 yards and scored five touchdowns. Marty Van Zeeland booted four straight extra points before having the fifth block because of a bad snap from the center.

 

October 29, 1965

John F. Elrick, Little Chute, was fatally injured early Thursday morning on Interstate 94 west of Kenosha when the semi-truck he was driving overturned.  The truck belongs to the Combined Locks Paper Company. Mr. Elrick local businessman was known throughout the area as the owner of Jack's Pizza; Little Chute and he had been working as a relief driver for the paper company since March 1963.

 

Badger Northland Inc. today announced the appointment of Tage Madsen to the position of General Factory Manager. Badger Northland operates two plants in Kaukauna and another in Algoma, Wisconsin. The company produces a line of farmstead and field equipment.
