Kaukauna’s Marty Costa, manager of the Pechman Studios here, was honored nationally when four of his photographs were accepted for hanging at the Statler Hilton Hotel in New York City. He has been associated with Pechman for the last three years. This is his second successive year that his work was accepted at the national.

 

Tickets for the fifth annual Bishop’s Charity football game between the Packers and New York Giants are now on sale.  Packers’ ticket manager reported the largest advance sale of in the five-year history of the charity series, which will be played August 14 in Green Bay’s enlarged City Stadium.

 

July 7, 1965

The annual VFW picnic will be getting underway this weekend, and as usual midway rides, entertainment and concessions will be featured. There will be teen dances on Friday and Sunday night. Dan Head is the picnic chairman, and Dick Verfurth, is in charge of the finance committee.

 

July 9, 1965

Young people 16-21 years of age who obtain summer jobs through President Johnson’s Youth Opportunity Campaign should be sure to obtain a social security account number before they start work.

 

A total of 51 people are taking lifesaving courses at the Kaukauna swimming pool this summer.

 

The first step toward an interconnection of Kaukauna and Menasha electrical utilities was taken at a meeting of utilities commissions of the two cities in Menasha. A proposed 14-mile transmission line between the two cities will help in pooling their, generating facilities. 

 

The location of the Jubilee stockade remained a mystery at press time on Thursday.  The discovery was made that it was missing Wednesday morning by Joe Van Daalwyk. The stockade was being kept in a building at his construction company.

 

July 14, 1965

Army Pvt. William J. Verhagen Little Chute completed a seven-week, combat engineer course, at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 1964 graduate of St. John High School.

 


Sixty-five boys participated in the JC track meet Saturday, June 26, which produced one triple winner and several double winners. Mel Biersteker won three events in the prep division. He won the first place in the 220, the 440 and the broad jump with a leap of 16’2”. Joe Vandenberg won two events in the pee wee group. George Behnke won two events in the junior group and Steve Therriault won the intermediate events.   

 

A total of 89 boys and girls are enrolled as beginners in the summer band under the direction of Elwood Bleick and Stephan Schultz. Also receiving lessons are 169 intermediate and advanced students of the band and orchestra.

 

July 16, 1965

“To those who have expressed much interest in the Grignon Home we would like to comment that over 650 people have visited the historical museum since opening day.” “Many picnickers find the tour of the home as an added attraction for a family outing.” Comments were those of Miss DeClereq. 

 

The Kiddy Day for the 175th Jubilee will be held July 21 at 7 pm on both sides of the river at the same time. All boys and girls are encouraged, that have bikes, trikes, buggys, wagons, pets or costumes to participate. Participants are urged to decorate their vehicles and wear costumes appropriate to the occasion. Both groups will meet at the library grounds. 

 

Sunday marks the opening of the new Kaukauna Veterinary Clinic on Hyland Ave. with an open house. Dr. John Palarski will be welcoming all the visitors.

 

 Earl “Sap” Schuler firing a two over par 38 was medalist at the Kaukauna Knights of Columbus golf outing at Hickory Hills Chilton. Other low scores were Don Siebers 39 and Clarence O’Connor 40, Bud Boots 41, Don Geenen 42 and Wes Romenesko 43.

 

July 21, 1965

Ves Hanby fired a hole in one on the 170-yard No. 9 hole Saturday in a foursome at Fox Valley golf links. Hanby used a No. 8 iron and finished with a 38 for the round.

   

The Kaukauna 175th Jubilee opened with a pronounced band promptly at 12 noon yesterday.  Aerial salutes combined with a 175-gun salute, firing sirens and church bells to make the opening of Jubilee week in Kaukauna official. Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon made the opening welcome to those in attendance. The Wisconsin National Guard led one firing squad and the Kaukauna Legion firing squad was led by Michael Gerhartz.  

 

Robert Goetzman was re-elected president of the Kaukauna High School Alumni association at the board of directors meeting. New directors were also introduced. Saturday Nov. 27 was the date selected for the Alumni Fall dance.

 

July 28, 1965

Buntings are still on the downtown buildings and in store windows. Kaukauna is basking in the afterglow of the week-long 175th Jubilee celebration that captured the attention as few things have in a generation or more. It was big. The parade which lasted almost two hours was big. The crowd of 20,000 lined the streets from the startup on Wisconsin Avenue to the break-up on Third Street.      

 

July 30, 1965

Kaukauna Eagle’s will sponsor its fourth annual street dance Saturday August 7 for the benefit of the St. Paul Home for the Aged. The dance will run from 9 pm to 1 am on Oak Street adjacent to the Eagles Hall. Tickets are available at the Eagles Hall or from members. 

Leon Vanevenhoven, 14, is the newest Times carrier boy. He peddles papers on the north side of town. He is a sophomore at Kaukauna high school.

 

Gary Hostettler, 17, has been a Times carrier since November of 1963. He delivers papers on the south side of Kaukauna. Gary has just completed his junior year at Kaukauna High School.

 

Tim Hardtke, 15, has been peddling the Kaukauna Times for 6 years on the north side of Kaukauna. He is in his sophomore year at Kaukauna High School.

 

Kevin Coleman, 14, has been a Times carrier on the north side for one year. Kevin will be a sophomore at Kaukauna High School this fall.  

 

Awards for the best costumes were won by the three characters pictured. Mark Kilgas as “Wild Bill Hickock”, Marv Hooyman, completed as an “Old Prospector” and Irvin Atkinson, Jr. portrayed as Abe Lincoln.

July 1, 1955

Corporal Karl Conrad has re-enlisted for a year with the Sixth Army Band, and is stationed at Presidio, San Francisco, California.


Sgt. Frank A. Lenz, 22, is a member of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. He has been in the army since 1949.

 

The modernistic addition to St. Mary’s parochial school is shown. The dedication for the new school has been set for October.


July 8, 1955

Paul B. Maes arrived June 25 at Fort Carson, Colo., where he is undergoing six weeks of field training at the Army ROTC summer camp.


July 13, 1955

Harry McAndrews scored a hole-in-one on the No. 9 hole at Fox Valley Golf Club last Thursday.


Four Little Chute youths and one from Kimberly were among the members of the July 18 draft. From Little Chute men are William E. Jansen, Joseph F. Minten, Ronald C. Hietpas and Jerome G. DeCoster. James G. Wydeven is from Kimberly.


July 15, 1955

Costume Day for the youngsters at the park playground. The winners paused to have their pictures taken. On Tuesday, the new Bank of Kaukauna will hold its open house, following the recent completion of work on the building. The bank, completely new and modernized, will be open for inspection, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until 4:30p.m. During that period, visitors will be taken on guided tours of the entire quarters with all the new and revamped features being pointed out.


July 17, 1955

Sam Young, recently hired head football coach of Kaukauna High School, has requested a release from his teaching contract here in order to resume his position at Black River Falls.

Ed Matchett of Kaukauna has been appointed Department National Home Director of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for a one-year term.

Slight in stature but able to outwork most men half his age and twice his size is 86-year-old Rainnier Bies a retired farmer, who with his 82-year-old wife live on west Sixth Street, Kaukauna. Passersby, even in the early morning hours, can hear the sound of wood being sawed as the wiry man diligently adds stick after stick and row after row to the woodpile. He received the wood from friends and neighbors. He and his wife use wood in the kitchen stove and for heating their home. 


The Kaukauna Electric and Water Department continues to lead all 90 municipal utilities in the state in the contribution made to its owner-the city of Kaukauna. The utility has paid $78,218 into the treasury of the city last year.

July 20, 1955

In response to numerous questions regarding the LaFollette Park Wading Pool the Recreation Department has announced this week that it has been condemned by the board of health and will not be filled or, used this summer.


July 22, 1955

 

A rare and interesting silver monstrance will be used at Holy Cross Catholic Church this Sunday. The benediction will be part of the celebration marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Knights of Columbus in Kaukauna. The engraving on the base of the vessel indicated it was given in 1686 to the Mission of St, Francis Xavier in De Pere by the governor of all this region for France.  

  

Tom Hennes, 17, of Kaukauna was among the winners in the recent Fox Valley Archers outdoor Target Championship Tournament in Fond du Lac. Hennes scored 1304 to take second in the Junior Boys event.


July 27, 1955

A total of 45 cases of poliomyelitis in Outagamie County were thus far reported this season. Kaukauna leads the list with 13 cases in this city.

July 29, 1955

In response to numerous inquiries by parents of youngsters under 16 years of age concerning special restrictions implied by the health department decree asking that youngsters of the city be confined to their homes. The rule applies to attending churches, baby-sitting, bean picking or any social mixing.

Three former Kaukauna High School classmates from the class of 1953, all serving with the armed forces met in Korea. Richard Giordana, Kenneth Van Dynhoven and John Landreman.     


Two Kaukauna servicemen met in Germany. Pvt. Robert M. Eiting and Pvt. Arthur Vande Hey are stationed 30 miles apart and met on the weekend. They joined the military last year.
