October 3, 1973

Mayor LaPlante congratulates Leroy Fieck prior to beginning his run.


Mighty Leroy has “struck out”. Leroy Fieck of Kaukauna had planned to walk around Lake Winnebago this weekend but had to give up when he came up with a leg cramp after covering 26 miles of the 88.6-mile trip.  “I plan to try it again in the future,” he said. 


October 5, 1973

The Summer activity program of St. Mary’s Cub Pack 27 has earned a “National Summertime Pack Award.” Pictured with the award are John Eppinger, Ron De Leeuw, Tom, and Russel De Leeuw.

 

Numerous complaints have been received by the Kaukauna Health Department of the presence of rats in areas of the city. Residents are reminded that garbage cans need to be covered and not put out before the day of pickup.

 

October 10, 1973

Vicki Biese, a Quinney School 7th grader, was notified during the summer that an article she had submitted would be published in the KIDS magazine. The article which explained how to make tissue paper flowers appeared in the June vacation issue. Vicki received $6 plus three issues of the magazine for her contribution.

 

October 12, 1973

By sweeping a three-game series with Appleton East and one of three from the Neenah Rockets, the Kaukauna Ghosts net squad completed their 1973 season with an excellent mark of 21-3 and in doing so picked up their 4th consecutive conference championship.


A warning has been issued that a salesman has been reported in Kaukauna attempting to sell watches that have false brand name labels. The salesman says the watches are worth about 10 times higher than their actual value.


October 17, 1973

Robert Vander Bloemen has reason to be proud of his chinchilla rabbit. It won the grand champion trophy at the state 4-H Rabbit show.

Kaukauna’s Ken Roloff became the 9th person to be enshrined for athletic prowess at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hall of Fame. Roloff won 8 varsity letters in football, basketball, and track. As a junior he led the conference in passed receptions and led the team in scoring. He has been the head varsity football coach at Kaukauna since 1967.

 

In just four carries, Hollandtown Raider fullback Bill Spearman scored three touchdowns and led his team in rushing as the Raiders crushed the Cedar Springs, Michigan Red Hawks 33-6 Saturday night.


October 31, 1973

Raymond Raab toasted a bun on the grill during his first day as operator of the downtown Villa Restaurant.


Miss Carol Schuh of Little Chute is a member of the university of Wisconsin Platteville marching pioneers and will perform at the Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears game on November 4th at Green Bay.

October 9, 1963

Four holes-in-one in one season . . . two in one day . . .  three in a week! The club house boys at Fox Valley Golf club house call it “The Tom Bonger’s Story”. Tom, 16, shot this remarkable kind of golf in a hot streak at season’s end this year.


August 11 – Tom scored an ace on the 170-yard No. 9.


September 7 – He again fired a hole-in-one on the No. 9. 


September 14 – Tom sank a-hole-in one on the 175-yard No. 6.

That evening he fired a hole-in-one on No. 9.


Winners of footballs autographed by the players of the World Champion Green Bay Packers were received by Mrs. Don Stuyvenberg Kaukauna on the left and Gary Cootway of Wrightstown on the right. The footballs were presented by Arthur Mongin Jr., center, a member of the Packer’s board of directors. The winners had submitted entries in a program at the Bishop’s charity game.

October 11, 1963


Reigning over Kaukauna High School's 1963 Homecoming festivities on October 19 will be Queen Sharon Chamness and her attendants Karen Van Epern and Linda Vanderloop.

 

 

A tentative 1964 school budget of $1,030,196 representing an increase of $170,474 over the 1963 figure was approved by the board of education in Kaukauna. Residents of Kaukauna will be required to pay $167,101 more in 1964.



Joseph Walsh has been named to the Board of Directors of the Kaukauna Chamber of Commerce to succeed Arthur Peters.  Walsh is associated with the James T. O’Connell Insurance Agency in Kaukauna and has worked with the Chamber in the past years.  


October 16, 1963

Residents are reminded that a city ordinance forbids the burning of leaves on the asphalt surface of any public street. Residents are asked to rake leaves on to the parkway and the city will pick up the piled leaves with its vacuum leaf collector.


October 23, 1963

Eugene DeBruin of Kaukauna, whose plane was shot down by communist in Laos several weeks ago, has been reported by Air America to be alive but a prisoner.

    DeBruin, 30, was a crew member of the Air America plane which was shot down by the Pathet Lao on September 5 in northern Laos. He was one of three Americans aboard the plane. The Pathet Lao mentioned Eugene’s name last Saturday as the only survivor.

    Senator Nelson (Dem) Wisconsin later contacted the DeBruin’s and told them the state department was negotiating for the release of Eugene. No information was available as to whether he was injured.

October 25, 1963

A new Community Bulletin board located atop the city garage was recently completed. The Kaukauna Electric and Water Department has financed construction of the board, which will inform the citizens of our city of "What's going on in Kaukauna."


October 30, 1963


A collision between two fire trucks in Hollandtown resulted in the deaths of three volunteer firemen. Donald Van Abel, Jerome Van Abel, and Donald Fassbender were victims of the tragic crash.





 

A six-point, 127-pound buck, was shot by Cliff Nushart, Tenth Street, last week. He says this is the first one he has bagged since he first began bow hunting in 1956.
