October 2, 1903

The first football game of the season was played at the home grounds on Saturday afternoon, between Kaukauna High and St. Norbert's college team of De Pere. In spite of the fact that the ground was soft, and the entire game was run off in pouring rain, there were many good plays made and Kaukauna won the game.

Rev. Franz Aigner and wife took their departure Tuesday for their new home in Cleveland, Ohio, where he assumes the pastorate of the German Reformed church. Mr. Aigner leaves the church with which he was associated for the past fourteen years.

This past May a 17-year-old white girl was found living with the Osage Indians. She was taken by them when she was a child many years ago. The girl was rescued through the efforts of attorney Horace Speed and two deputy marshals.

St. Francis church, the imposing Hollandtown edifice which was erected at a total cost of upwards of $32,000 and which has been entirely paid for by that congregation within a few years, was consecrated with imposing ceremonies last Sunday by Bishop Messmer and Mgr. Fox.

A franchise granting the Knox Construction company the use of certain streets on which to enter the city with Interurban line, between here and Green Bay, was passed by a majority vote.

An unusual event occurred at the New York state prison in Dannemora, N.Y. For the murder of their uncle three brothers were executed. Willis Van Wormer was the first to be taken to his doom. The current passed through his body at 11:35. His brother Frederick lay lifeless six- and one-half minutes later and Hurton was dead just five minutes thereafter.

Miss Hattie Landon of this city, and her girlfriend, while driving on College Avenue at Appleton Saturday became involved in a serious collision. Their carriage was wrecked and both ladies were thrown to the ground. The horse became frightened by the approach of an electric car.

Arthur Hilgenberg, 15, received a serious gunshot wound in his foot through the carelessness of John Wheaton. The boys were in the street near Mich. Hahner's, where young Hilgenberg was reading a newspaper, and the Wheaton boy approached with a rifle which he was loading as he walked along, with the muzzle pointed downwards towards Hilgenberg, when it was accidentally discharged, the 22-long caliber entering the foot between his 2 small toes, and striking the sole of the foot on a slant was deflected into the instep about the center of the foot.

The old Grignon homestead of Green Bay, occupied by David Grignon and family was destroyed by fire last Thursday. That building was the first one of the oldest, if not actually the oldest building in old Green Bay, and contained many antiques in the way of furniture, books, etc., which had come down from the Grignon and Lawe families. Many of these valuables which can never be replaced were destroyed.

October 30, 1903

Eleven horses and four mules were suffocated in a fire which broke out in the barns of the Appleton Brewery and Malting Company.
