August 7, 1914

EXTRA-Washington, D.C. Aug. 6 Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, wife of the President of the United States, died at the White House at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Wilson died of a lingering illness of several months. President Wilson and their three daughters were at the bedside when her time came.


A 16-year-old boy who said Robert Brown took Albert Kunz’s dinner pail from the car shops Monday morning. Mr. Kunz discovered the theft when he took his dinner at noon. Brown said he was very hungry and that he had left home last spring and has been tramping since.

 

An ordinance was passed at the regular monthly meeting of the common council, dividing Kaukauna into two park districts for the purpose of obtaining parks in the city without the opposition of citizens on the other side of town. With this division both sides of the river will have good opportunities to secure parks without opposition from each other.


Richard H. McCarty is the popular local candidate for nomination for county sheriff.


August 14, 1914

Great Britain declared war on Germany at 7 o'clock Tuesday night, August 6. The German Ambassador has demanded his passports and diplomatic relations between France and Germany have been broken off. "War is declared."

Army and Navy Journal - The war in which the great European powers are now engaged will be short and decisive. The journal also states this war will not be the last war as some are predicting. As long as racial prejudice exists and until there is universal brotherhood wars will occur. The treaties will be signed at the close and will last until the vanquished have gained sufficient strength to attempt to regain their last honor and territory. 


The Hilgenberg Bros. have taken a lease of the room adjoining their barber shop on Wisconsin Avenue and have started the work of installing a set of three bowling alleys in the building.  

 

August 21, 1914

Joe Verstegen a prominent Little Chute businessman is a Democratic candidate for nomination as assemblyman second district.

 

Prices on drugs and medicines are expected to rise 40 to 75 percent because of the war.

 

St. Petersburg – The outbreak of the war has caused an abrupt change in the Russian government’s attitude toward the liquor traffic. Commanding officers are ordered to discourage the drinking of liquor and to set an example.  


President Wilson addressed the American people asking them to observe strict neutrality in speech and conduct in the present European conflict and to act in a spirit of impartiality and fairness to all concerned.

Pope Pius X passed away Thursday morning August 20. He has been ill for a short time. He was 80 years old.  Only the day before he departed this life, he issued a plea for world peace.

 

August 28, 1914

Hundreds of people are enjoying High Cliff Park daily from our area and three steamers a day arrive from Oshkosh each day with excursionists.

Charles E. Raught, candidate for nomination on the Republican ticket for the office of Congressman in the Ninth Congressional district of the State of Wisconsin. Raught, is the editor and proprietor of the Kaukauna Times Printing company.  


Miss Loretta Peters, of Kimberly, 15 years of age, was one whose case was reviewed at a hearing before the state industrial commission last week. Miss Peters lost a finger on her right hand on May 4 this year at the Tuttle Press company at Appleton. The employers’ insurance company claims that she is not entitled to compensation because the whistle had not blown for work to begin when the accident occurred.

Little Chute Baseball Team - 1914 - Standing, Boots Lamers, Stub Peters, Jack Van Dyke, Jackson. Bevers-Coach, Corneil Wynboom, Emmit Wood, Louie Service, Henry Schommer, Shorty Wynboom, Rube Verstegen. Front, Bat Boy, Les Verstegen, Pitcher, Marty Lamers, Catcher, Stanley Keava, at the ball field at Grand and Mc Kinley.

Kaukauna went down in defeat before Little Chute last Sunday by the score of Little Chute 4 and Kaukauna 2. Smoky Dietzler, Leo Nagan and Kromer starred for the locals. Little Chute’s battery was Lamers and Peters.
