March 1, 1935

 

“Snowbound in the Hills” might be an appropriate title for the blizzard which raged here on Monday. Many people were marooned on the highways Sunday night and homes were called upon to house unexpected guests over Monday.

A reduction of ten cents per hour for common labor on work relief projects in the area will be affected if the rate of 45 cents per hour is approved by the Wisconsin Emergency Relief administration. 

Harvey Bernard, 13, of Oshkosh, disappeared over a week ago. Telling his playmates that he was going to sell his toys and go away, His family has asked the police throughout Wisconsin to aid in search for him.

 

March 5, 1935

The payroll for Kaukauna FERA workers last week amounted to $160. Appleton workers received $268 and Little Chute workers $50.

 

March 8, 1935

Adolph A. Bauer, operator of the Cozy Inn here was fined $10 and costs, or 20 days in jail by Judge Ryan in municipal court, Appleton. Kaukauna police officers found the place open at 2:45 Monday morning.

Dane county sheriff Larsen and district attorney Beggs are surveying the efforts of their war on gambling devices.

 

Two Kaukauna youths, William Nagel and Carl Van Dyke and Ed Schuler of Combined Locks escaped serious injury or death in an auto accident which occurred in Combined Locks early Tuesday morning. The car they were in rolled over several times before striking posts in an effort to avoid hitting a train. The car was a total loss, but the three young men were not injured.

 

March 12, 1935

R. H. McCarty, chief of police announced that all cars must have new plates on them by April 1.

 

March 15, 1935

A. M. Schmalz was elected Chef de Gare of the Outagamie County Voiture 1140 at a meeting held last month. This is an ex-serviceman’s organization and any white male member in good standing of the American Legion shall be eligible for membership.

 

After a brief attempt to “make Dillinger look like a cream puff” Morris Jenshak, 19, Saturday began a three to seven years sentence at Waupun on charges of assault and robbery. Last November the Green Bay youth held up a filling station, shot a farmer who helped him get his car out of a ditch and also stole the Calumet county sheriff’s car.

 

March 22, 1935

At the regular meeting of the Boy Scout troop 27 in St. Mary’s church Tuesday evening the troop’s enrollment reached the limit for a single troop. It has taken four years to achieve this goal.

 

March 26, 1935

Kaukauna police made 10 arrests during the weekend. They included two drunken drivers, two for drunkenness, five for disorderly conduct and one motorist for driving a car without plates.

 

March 29, 1935

Phil Zwick, Kaukauna native, with a smashing right cross to the jaw, crushed Herb Bishop, Australian lightweight champion, to the floor in Sydney, Australia, Monday evening.
