August 3, 1966
Jenny Gerrits smashed a home run in the bottom
of the seventh to complete a rally that saw the Kaukauna girls All-Star team
score a come from behind 12-11 victory over Menasha in a game played Thursday
at the 10th Street diamond. Gerrits blow came as she led off the frame. It was
her only hit of the afternoon. Down 11-4 Kaukauna fought back to tie the count
with three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.
Peter Joseph Schuh, Route 1, Kaukauna, will be
among more than 70 Wisconsin families who will be honored at the State Fair of
Wisconsin for having a farm that has been in possession of the same family for
100 years or more. Since the century farm program began in 1948 more than 1200
Wisconsin families have received certificates donating ownership for 100 years
or more.
Mrs. John Diedrich, Kaukauna, won the grand
prize stereo set and Mrs. Elmer Kunstman, Appleton, won the grand prize lawn
mower at Kaukauna's fifth annual sidewalk sale last Thursday sponsored by the
retail division of the Chamber of Commerce.
Richard Stegeman is serving as this year's pool
supervisor at Kaukauna Memorial pool. Bruce Knapp holds the position of
assistant supervisor. Rich is in his third year working at the pool. The 1964
graduate of Kaukauna High School will be a junior at Stevens Point next
semester. Bruce is also currently in his third year of working at the pool. He
graduated Kaukauna high school in 1965 and will be a sophomore at Stevens point
this fall.
Pat Baumgart, Dan Egan, Ricci Giordana and Reed
Giordana won championships in the Kaukauna City Tennis Tournament. Pat Baumgart
took the 16 and under crown, Dan Egan won the 14 and under, Ricci Giordana the
12 and under and Reed Giordana won the 10 and under crown.

Harry Wilson, football coach at Kaukauna High
School, received a Master of Education degree with a major in guidance from
Wisconsin State University at Superior Friday.
Michael M. Klein, 82, former dairy
farmer from Kaukauna has died. He was a member of a pioneer family and lived
here all his life on the family farm. The Klein farm extended from LaFollette
Park, formerly known as Klein’s Park, to his home on 11th street.
August 12, 1966
The City of Kaukauna is
in mourning today following the sudden death early Wednesday of its Mayor for
more than twenty years, Joseph "Doty" Bayorgeon, 60. Funeral
services will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Church and burial
will be in the parish cemetery. Flags are half-mast throughout the city until
after the funeral, and stores will be closed Saturday during the funeral. Doty
Bayorgeon took pride in the accomplishments of every Kaukauna citizen, mourned
in each of their sorrows and helped them in troubles. He was particularly concerned about the youth
of this community. Mayor Bayorgeon had a deep concern for every detail
concerning Kaukauna and its people, and took a great amount of responsibility
in all events or occurrences in this city. In his efforts to prevent juvenile
delinquency, Bayorgeon pushed the recreation program in the city, feeling that
keeping young people busy was the best way to prevent it. The development of
the "Doty" Bayorgeon Recreation Area in the vicinity of the swimming
pool and athletic fields was a major accomplishment of his time. That it was
named for him during his lifetime is an unusual tribute. Joseph
"Doty" Bayorgeon will be greatly missed be Kaukauna and its people.”
A new supermarket will be built by Larry's
Market Incorporated on land located just south of the intersection of Crooks
Avenue and 11th St. in Kaukauna according to Lawrence Verhagen. The site was a
housing development for servicemen after World War II. 13 Quonset huts were
built on the property which housed 26 family units. Larry's market Inc.
currently operates two Piggy Wiggly supermarkets in the area. One is located on
Dodge Street in Kaukauna; the other is on the east end of Little Chute just off
Highway 96.
August 19, 1966
Gilbert J. Anderson, an alderman for thirteen years, was elected
mayor of Kaukauna by the Kaukauna City Council Tuesday evening. The election
came on the first ballot to elect a mayor, after three nominating ballots.
August 24, 1966
The highlight of the presentation of girl’s
awards on “Award Day” last Friday at the Library Park was the girl of the year
award won by Kris Landreman. Kris displayed a fine attitude in contributing to
all-girls sports and well liked said Bonnie Jerow, sports director. Other
trophies were given to outstanding performances on the girls’ softball team.
Jenny Gerrits was named most valuable player and Lynn Belling received an award
for highest batting average.
William J Glasheen, 58, of Kaukauna has
died. His funeral services were held on Tuesday. Mr. Glasheen was a veteran of
the Outagamie County traffic patrol and its captain for nine years.
The Kaukauna girls were in trouble twice in a
game with Darboy here last Thursday, but they bounced back to a 14-10 win to
cap a perfect season in the intercity girls’ softball league. Kaukauna started the game scoring with a
rally of five runs in the first. Mary Belling led off with a walk and advanced
to score on a single by Jane Simon and a double by Denise Mereness. After Barb
McPhail walked, Jennie Gertz homered to clear the bases and end the scoring.
Presentation of awards to top ranking boys and
the Kaukauna recreation Department took place last Friday at the Library Park.
The boy of the year trophy went to Bob VanDeHey for the north side and Leon
Franzke for the south side. Bob participated in Junior softball alternating
between catcher and pitcher. Leon was the top scorer in basketball. In Junior
softball he hit .441.
August 26, 1966
When school starts on Thursday, September 1, at
Kaukauna High School there will be 80 teachers and approximately 1273 students
beginning the first semester. Walter Schmidt is principal of the high school,
and Jerome Kroll is assistant principal and guidance counselor.

Don E. Beyer, Kaukauna, will leave
September 6 for Sierra Leone, West Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. Buyer has
completed 10 weeks of training at Roosevelt University, Chicago. He will be one
of several new volunteers replacing those now ending two years of teaching at
the secondary level and Sierra Leone.

head librarian at Kaukauna public library on September 1.

Airman Alan D. Schuh, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Merlin N. Schuh of R.R. 3, Kaukauna, Wis., has been selected for technical
training at Keesler AFB, Miss., as a U. S. Air Force communications-electronics
specialist.
Airman Joseph John Ribarchek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ribarchek of 1609 Glenview Ave., Kaukauna, Wis., has been selected for technical training at Sheppard AFB, Tex., as a U.S. Air Force medical service specialist.
Staff Sgt. Richard L Van Domelen, Little Chute, is now
in Vietnam in the fight against communist aggression. Van Domelen is an
administration specialist in the Pacific Air Forces.
Capt. Jerome Siebers, Kaukauna, is
presently serving in Vietnam as the officer in charge of the 30th
weather squadron. This unit is unique and so much as it provides combat weather
support including forecast, observation from the station and the information is
forward to combat areas of the first division. He has been awarded an M.S.
degree in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin. Capt. Siebers degree
was conferred under rather unusual circumstances as he is currently assigned to
a command weather unit in Vietnam.
Sp/4 Gerald Krieger, Kaukauna, recently began
serving in Vietnam. Krieger, working with the Army engineers building roads and
airstrips.
First Lieut. Louis M.
McGoey,
Kaukauna, is now in Vietnam in the fight against communist aggression. Lieut.
McGoey, an administrative officer, received his commission in 1963. He is a
graduate of Kaukauna High School and the Wisconsin State University
Oshkosh.
