August 3, 1976

 

Following a three-hour rain delay during the K.A.C. Women's 12" Fast Pitch State Tournament, officials set fire to gasoline poured on wet mud to dry out the field.

 

Midtec Paper Co. and Kimberly-Clark finalized terms for Midtec's acquisition of the Kimberly Mill. The sale called for employees to return to work, securing roughly $2 million in annual pension benefits and $2 million in severance/severance-related benefits.

 

Kaukauna Recreation Department Summer Theater staged Anything Goes at Kaukauna High School Auditorium. Among the cast are (l to r) Colleen Reardon, Karen Weyenberg, Lori Wurdinger, Kim Meyers, Molly Schuler, Linda Deering, Debbie Huss, Kim Hrubesky, Joan Vandenberg and Susanne Verbeten. With the drum are Mary Van Grinsven, Katie Jacques, Joel Buchanan and Dave Lewis. 

 

August 12, 1976

 

Workmen from the Kaukauna Electric and Water Depts. began wiring the newly installed lights on the football field this week. 

 

The Fire and Police Commission presented a plan to the Public Protection and Safety Committee proposing part-time firefighters for Kaukauna. Part-time members would hold the rank of "Part Time Fire Fighter" with a suggested pay of $1,000 per year, regardless of the number of fires. Alderman Frank Potter expressed support for a 24-person volunteer auxiliary combined with transferring six firefighters to a proposed new north side station.

 

Highway Sign Vandalism Law, first-time sign vandalism carries a $25 fine, 30 days imprisonment, or both. If sign vandalism leads to a fatality, penalties increase up to a $10,000 fine and two years’ imprisonment.

 

August 17, 1976

 

King of the Schut is Jesse Vanderloop. A former Kaukaunan, he returned for a weekend and entered the Hollandtown event and his shot the 1444^th was the one which brought down the last of the bird.

 

Marine Reserves on active duty in California. PFC Thomas G. Pomeroy and PFC Michael W. Jansen of Kaukauna underwent two weeks of active duty at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California.

 

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approved a permit for the City of Kaukauna to construct a 200-foot seawall, breakwater, and boat launch at Riverside Park.

 

August 19, 1976

 

IVYLE VOET, (second from right) who pioneered women’s softball leagues in the city of Kaukauna 16 years ago was honored for her past and present accomplishments Thursday night. Above, she accepts a trophy, corsage and a gift certificate from a few of her friends, including (from left) Grandma Kate Specht, Judy Diedrich, Kathy Van Gompel, Carolyn Johnson and George Kautza.

 

When the beer was all gone, the empty 12-pak canton made a great sun shade at the K.A.C. 16” tourney over the weekend.

 

Dr. John Palarski reported a break-in at Kaukauna Veterinary Clinic on Hyland Ave. discovered around 7 a.m. Friday, where thieves broke a screen and window to enter. Five firearms were stolen and the thieves also took $30 in rolled coins, along with cash and checks, totaling $1,050 in losses.

KRD Women's League Softball results Janice Hammen delivered a clutch two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to give Joseph's Shoes a 12–11 extra-inning victory over Mel's Outer Limits for the KRD women's league second-half championship on Monday. Hammen, who stepped in after teammate Sue Gerow, was ejected in the seventh inning for protesting a call and drove two runs for the win.

 

August 24, 1976

 

Gary Landreman, the new recreation director, is making up schedules at the office.

 

Marion Krumm was Kaukauna's first special education teacher and is retiring after 21 years of teaching special education in the district since 1955. Her husband, Guy Krumm—a longtime Kaukauna teacher, coach, and athletic director—is also retiring this year.

 

The Kaukauna Municipal Electrical Utility and other area municipal utilities won a favorable ruling from the Federal Power Commission (FPC), reducing Wisconsin Michigan Power Company's proposed rate increase to $203,000 annually 46% of the requested $432,000.

 

August 26, 1976

Approximately 1,200 members of UPIU Locals 20 and 147 voted by a large margin to authorize a strike following the rejection of Thilmany’s latest monetary offer.

 

Harold Kobin retires from coaching following doctor's advice.  Harold Kobin is stepping down from all coaching duties after 20 years, though he will remain as a K.H.S. mathematics teacher.

 

August 31, 1976

The Kaukauna Board of Education is addressing Department of Public Instruction Title IX regulations regarding sex discrimination, which impact single-sex activities such as glee clubs and basketball teams. The board has completed considerable planning to ensure district compliance with all state Title IX rules.

 

Matine Lance Corporal Robert J. Dercks, Kaukauna, has reported for duty at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune N.C. 

 

E/3 Debbie Meinert Matthews, former Kaukauna resident, has received her discharge from the Navy after 28 months of service. She worked in the pediatrics at the US Naval Hospital at Newport, Rhode Island.
