Time Machine Trip to March 1967






Hello Fellow Time Travelers,

Well it’s time to fire up the old “Time Machine Chair” and travel back in time to March of 1967.

For today’s trip, Dan Plutchak will be sitting in the front seat operating the Time Machine. Now the big wheel is spinning, the years are clicking back and in no time, we are back on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue.

March 1, 1967
The Kaukauna Ghosts overcame handicaps to clip Menasha 66-58 in another heart stopper Friday night at the Kaukauna gym. The victory gives the Ghost a season mark of 11-3 in the conference and 14-3 overall for sole possession of second place in the final conference standings in the best record ever obtained by the Kaukauna basketball team since entering the Mid-Eastern Conference in 1951.

The Mighty Ghosts are bound for the sectionals in Green Bay. March 15, 1967
Kaukauna high school, who had lived by the big comeback all season couldn’t quite come up with it in the finals of the sectional tournament as they were beaten by Green Bay West 65-50 and a game played before 5748 fans at the Green Bay Arena Saturday night.  The loss dropped the Ghosts season record to 18-4 the most wins ever scored by a team in Kaukauna high school history.

March 17, 1967
Ten returning letterman will provide the foundation for coach Ron Margelofsky's 1967 Kaukauna high school track team. The 10 Letterman are Capt. Steve Therriault, Tim Leatherbury, Dennis Spice, Bill Derricks, Marty Van Zeeland, Bob Jansen, Bill Verhagen, Pat Kavanaugh, John Van De Hey and Nick Kuhn.

The world Champion Green Bay Packers have drafted 22 players in 17 rounds of the pro football draft. Bob Hyland a 6-5 240 lb. offensive lineman from Boston college was the Packers first choice. Don Horn a 6-2 195 lb. quarterback from San Diego state was the second pick. Picks in the second round were Dave Dunaway, Jim Flanigan, John Rowser, Travis Williams, Dwight Hood, Rich Tate and Stewart Williams.


THE VARSITY wrestling team of Kaukauna High school finished with the best record since the sport started in 1964 with a 12 win 5 loss mark. The coyote and fox catch on display at Dave’s Sport Shop was made this winter by hunters from the Kaukauna and Freedom area. The animals can only be hunted in the winter because of the tracking snow.

March 22, 1967
Preparation for spring sports at Kaukauna high school are going full swing, and the latest to move into the spotlight is the golf team of Coach Gene Ploetz. Letterman back from last year include Jim Wolfgram, last year's most valuable player and the only senior slated for the front-line duty this season. Others include John Kuchelmeister, Mike Derus, Tom Baumgartner and Steve Wildenberg.


The Lox Club emerged the champion of this year’s KRD Men’s Volleyball league. Kneeling, John Lambie and Guy Senso. Standing are Richard Weigman, Ed Lutzow, Ken Kavanaugh and James Steger. 

March 29, 1967
The opening of the 1967 tennis season for Kaukauna high school finds six lettermen on hand to lead Coach Harold Kobin's net men. Kobin's hopes for a successful season are mostly based on Tom Berens, Mike Walsh, Bill Nagan, Terry Kobin, George Hagstrom and Dave Egan all who played last season.

Several complaints have been received by the Kaukauna Police Department of peddlers soliciting in the city. Harold Engerson, chief of police, reports that many of these people have failed to secure a license pursuant to city ordinance.

The 1967 addition of Kaukauna high school baseball team started to condition themselves for the season that lies ahead. The Ghosts Baseball Coach Dave Hash is looking for his team to improve on last year's winless campaign. Leading the lettermen's last year's leading hitter and most valuable player Tom Van De Hey. Other returning members includes; Don Heinz, John Jansen, Scott Lewandowski and Tom Vils.


KK sports arena has announced that their new quarter-mile drag way of 5000 feet is now the longest in the nation. The rapidly expanding sports arena now covers over 200 acres, according to Clarence “Connie” DeLeeuw, track manager.  Last year proved to be an excellent season at KK. The track open the stock-car racing on a half mile blacktop track with a figure 8 added to the excitement.
