Time Machine Trip to November 1967

November 1, 1967
The Kaukauna High School volleyball team, under Coach Dave Hash, copped the WIAA state championship last weekend, which was, for the first time, held at the Kaukauna High School gymnasium. The state title, Kaukauna's first ever, capped a tremendous season for the Ghosts, who had a season record of 42 wins against only six losses. At the state tournament, the Ghosts won four out of six games. The state championship is Kaukauna's first in any sport since 1953, when the Ghost baseball team claimed the title.



Carl L. Newhouse, Kaukauna, has been notified of his promotion to Major in the United States Army Reserve. Major Newhouse is currently serving as Executive Officer of the 1st. Battalion, 274th BCT Regiment at Appleton.

Two 18-year-old Kaukauna young men were killed in an automobile accident early Saturday morning at the junction of county Trunk UU and State Highway 55. The victims were Michael Van Handel and Richard Dercks.   

Superintendent of Schools Julian Bichler announced Monday that head football coach Harry Wilson had submitted his resignation. Wilson had been Kaukauna high school football coach for the past eight years. Wilson will continue to teach economics and social studies at KHS and will remain active in the athletic program.

November 3, 1967
Jim Pomeroy was named to the Mid. Eastern Conference all-conference offensive team for the 1967 season as Dick Huss repeated on the defensive team at a guard position. Other Ghost varsity gridders to receive honors this season included Mike Allgeyer, honorable mention at offensive guard and Bill Verhagen honorable mention for linebacker. Pat Brautigan was named to the offensive second team at safety position.

Marine Private Boomer Biesterveld, Little Chute, graduated from basic training and a two-week combat conditions of day and night patrolling of infantry weapons.

Carl Ploetz fires the high singleton and series in the Businessmen’s League with a 246 and a 606 series.



PFC Thomas W. Otte, Kaukauna, qualified as expert in the rifle division after completing basic and advanced training at Fort Hood, Texas. Tom has received his new assignment to Che Lai South Viet Nam where he is serving with the 198th Brigade.









November 8, 1967




Airman Victoria La Plante, Kaukauna, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. She has been assigned to the Air Force Technical Training Center at Amarillo AFB, Tex., for specialized schooling.














Airman Mary Alger, Kaukauna, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. She has been assigned to the Air Force Technical Training Center at Sheppard AFB, Tex., for specialty schooling as a medical services specialist.





The Kaukauna high school volleyball team closed out a most successful season this year capped with the State W.I.A.A. Championship to highlight their record. The varsity finished with an overall record of 42 wins and six losses. 

November 15, 1967
Bob Greiner turned in one of the finest bowling performances of the year as he fired a 258 singleton and a 667 series at Ludwig Lanes, Freedom.

November 17, 1967
The Outagamie County Draft Board has announced the inductees for two years for the month of November. Among the group are nine men from Kaukauna. Gary Vander Loop, Timothy Verhagen, Joseph Kerry, Allan Keberlein, Donald Nackers, Jerry King, Jack Vander Sanden, Anton Frank and Richard Doering. 

November 21, 1967
For the fourth year in a row, residential housing construction has increased in Kaukauna. A total of 42 home permits have been issued already this year compared to 36 in 1966.

Army Pfc. Anthony Wyngaard Jr. 20, of Kaukauna, has arrived in Vietnam with his unit, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade. He is one of about 3600 infantrymen who came ashore at Chu Lai.

Sergeant James Robedeaux of Kaukauna is on duty at Cam Ranh Bay AB, Vietnam. SGT. Robedeaux is a maintenance scheduler with the Pacific Air Forces. He is a 1954 graduate of Kaukauna High School.

November 27, 1967
Last Sunday, Green Bay registered their second shutout of the season defeating San Francisco 13-0 before 50861 at Lambeau Stadium. This Sunday they will travel to Chicago to take on the Bears seeking their sixth conference title in eight years.



Husky pivot man Dick Carstens had 26 points to lead all scorers as the Kaukauna basketball team defeated Fond du Lac 65-63.













November 29, 1967
The Green Bay Packers cliched the Central Division Title Sunday defeating the Chicago Bears 17-13 to take a 3 ½ game lead with 3 games to play.


The fifth-Grade class of Nicolet Elementary school received a tour of the TIMES office last week by Mr. Ray Nehrlich. The students were shown how the paper is produced from the typewriter to the press. Mr. Nehrlich is a former member of the Times Staff.
