February 4, 1959
Eight Kaukauna High School students have been
selected for a trip to the Trees for Tomorrow Conservation Camp at Eagle River.
There will be four juniors and four seniors making the trip. The students are
Carl Anderson, Aage Fredenslund, John Keefe, Lee Haass, Melvin Kruse, Gerald
Weyenberg, Paul Ozborn and Milo Straus.
Dennis Van Stiphout a senior at Kaukauna High
School was chosen “Safe Driver” of the month. He was selected by Lions Club to
receive the honor and his name will be engraved on the school trophy.
Edwin Lemke, general manager of the Badger
Tissue Mills in Kaukauna, expects to leave Kaukauna in February to join the
operating staff of the Steiner Company in Chicago. For Lemke it will mean a
jump from plant manager to the overall planning level of the company.
A northbound Northwestern railway passenger
train was hit by a car at the first crossing south of the depot, Sunday afternoon.
Martha Dercks was driving north on Draper Street when she slid into the side of
the train, the front end of the car was demolished.
The Kaukauna Ghosts were beaten by Two Rivers
Friday night in Two Rivers by the score of 81-46.
February 6. 1959
Members of the special Outagamie County board
committee were in Kaukauna Tuesday afternoon to look at the proposed sites for
the University of Wisconsin Extension center. Kaukauna has made an offer of 10
acres of land, with water, electricity, sewer facilities, with full fire and
police protection and landscaping of the area free of charge for the UW Extension.
Kaukauna’s Galloping Ghost turned in a good
performance Friday night outscoring fourth place Neenah, 71 to 65. As a result
of the win Kaukauna took sole possession of fifth place in the mid-east
conference. Ken Kavanaugh and LeRoy Weyenberg each scored 20 points to secure
the win.
Guy E. McCorison, formerly vice
president-sales, was elected Pres. of Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company at the
firm's annual meeting Thursday. He succeeds E. H. Jennings in the position.
Leigh Wachel bowled a high 177 game and Judy
Jacobson had a 343 two game series for high in the teenage loop.
February 13, 1959
Teenagers collected $705.60 for the Kaukauna
youth center during a house to house solicitation of the city Sunday afternoon
according to Walter Schmidt and Fred Barribeau, co-advisers of the center. “We
want to express appreciation for continued community support of the center”
they said.
High snow piles lined
residential streets today as a reminder of the winter's severest storm which
dumped 8 inches of snow on the area Tuesday. The city had 900 pounds of salt
and 1000 yards of sand on hand at the beginning of the season and this is
holding out well according to Robert Natrop, city engineer.
A small group of
students showed up for classes Monday morning at the Outagamie County Teachers
college after the heavy snowstorm. Pictured beside the snowman are Wayne Splitgerber,

Shermy Rogers rolled a high 251 game and walked
away with individual honors on the Monday night South Side Businessmen’s league
at Verbeten’s.
February 18, 1959
The Board of Education granted an increase in
the base pay of teachers at a meeting Thursday. Several board members expressed
dissatisfaction on overall raise and suggested that a merit system be adopted.
The base pay was increased from $3,900 to $4,100.
The Kaukauna Ghosts won their second straight
Mid-Eastern conference game Friday night when they outscored Clintonville, 41
to 37.
February 20, 1959
The door closed on Kaukauna’s strong effort to
obtain the University of Wisconsin extension center when the boards of
Outagamie and Winnebago Counties voted Tuesday for the Midway site between
Appleton and Menasha.
Police Chief Harold Engerson praised a group of
unidentified high school boys who helped an old man change a tire on a cold
night last week. The incident was reported by Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Mooney of
Wisconsin Avenue. “An elderly man and woman had a flat tire on their car and a
group of teenagers, at least six, were changing the tire for the man.” “The man
wanted to pay the boys, but they refused, the boys enjoyed helping as much as a
man enjoyed the help he had gotten.”
Darwood J. Anderson, Kaukauna, has completed
his navel basic training at Great lakes Ill., and is now stationed at Norfolk,
Va.
Army Pvt. Edwin P.
Schaefer,
18, Kaukauna, completed advance training as a truck driver in the artillery at
Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He is now stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
A jump shot dumped in with seconds left in
overtime. Climaxing the Kaukauna – Menasha game here Tuesday evening and gave
the Ghosts a 52 to 50 win. Kaukauna had trailed since late in the second period
when Myron Zachowski tied the game at 50 to 50. In the three minutes overtime
both teams missed shots. Then Gary Vanevenhoven took a pass and brought the
ball down the court making the winning basket.
February 25, 1959
Highlighting Brotherhood Week, Aage
Fredenslund, foreign exchange student from Denmark gave a short talk to the
students in the auditorium Thursday. In thanking the student body for the
friendliness shown to him, Aage said “Every minute is a great pleasure because
I feel like just one of the students and not like a foreigner.”
February 27, 1959
Some 130 volunteers will begin a house to house
canvass for Red Cross funds Monday. The quota for Kaukauna is $3200. Mrs. Carl
Johnson is the chair-person for the Red Cross Drive.
A check for $8445.26 was given to Mr. and Mrs.
Floyd Weyenberg. The money was collected through the Mayor's office and two
Kaukauna banks. The fund was organized after fire tragedy early Sunday,
December 21, which claimed the lives of Weyenberg’s six children when their
home on Harrison Street burned. “I want to express my appreciation to the
wonderful cooperative efforts and charity to all the people who gave time and
money in some way to alleviate this terrible tragedy which happened to the
Weyenberg’s,” said Mayor Bayorgeon.
Taking advantage of the
abundant snowfall are Timothy, Laurie and Debby Leatherbury of Brothers street,
Kaukauna.
