Time Machine Trip to May 1920

Kaukauna Times - by Lyle Hansen

May 6, 1920

It seems to the man on the street that owners of automobiles do not make a concerted effort to safeguard the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Lawe Street where a machine is exposed to danger. An approaching streetcar coming east on Wisconsin cannot be seen by the chauffeur, who must either stop, look and listen or pray for protection.  The city should insist that the traction company be required to install an electric signal to block the roadway similar to the railroads.

Ex-President William Howard Taft will lecture Tuesday evening in Lawrence Memorial Chapel in Appleton. He will speak on “The League of Nations up to Date.” He has been next to President Wilson in advocating that American take the lead in the formation of the League of Nations to preserve the peace of the world.

The body of Leo Farrell, a Kaukauna boy who enlisted in the Flame Brigade of the United States Army in the world war and died of pneumonia soon after reaching England, is expected to arrive here today.

Owners of automobiles should remember that Auto Light Order #2152 requires that all machines, except motorcycles must carry two headlights. One headlight and a spotlight does not comply with the law.

High School Baseball has begun in earnest. Last Saturday the first game of the season was played, with the Union Bag Team. The first five innings were rather one sided. The lack of practice caused many errors. By the fifth inning the Union Bag had tallied eleven scores, while we had none. The team got life in the next four innings but lost the game 12 to 7. The team consists of:
M. Trams – Catcher
L. Smith – Pitcher
D. Simon – First Base
A. Francois – Second Base
Kittell – Third Base
R. Smith – Short Stop
Engerson – Right Field
Meyer – Center Field
Creviere – Left Field

It is gratifying to record that the members of Kaukauna Post of the American Legion and other service men of the city will gratify the desire of many citizens and march in the parade in a body and clad in their full war uniforms on Memorial Day.

May 27, 1920

The cannon presented to the city will be formally placed on the Main Avenue boulevard on the foundation prepared Alfred Wagnitz and a crew of ex-service men who volunteered their services to prepare the foundation. The parade will proceed on a line of march and will terminate at the point of the permanent resting place of the cannon as a souvenir of the war.

The police department and the Board of Health served notices this week on property owners to clean up and rid their premises of manure and other rubbish. Throwing the refuse in the alleys will not be considered as a cleanup.
