July 6, 1900
The Kaukauna Hardware
Co. delivered to John LeClair of the town of Woodville a threshing outfit sold
to him. It was one of the largest ever brought to this section of the state,
being 18-horse engine and a 36-cylinder separator, with a capacity of 3000
bushel per day.
William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska was
unanimously placed in nomination as the Democratic candidate for president of
the United States.
July 13, 1900
The store of the
Kaukauna Hardware Co. on Third Street was entered by thieves sometime during
the Monday night and numerous articles taken. As near as can be ascertained
about 150 pocket knives, half a dozen revolvers, and several hunting knives
were stolen.
Among the improvements
being made at the Thilmany plant will be the addition of a 750 horsepower
Corliss engine, which will make the whole mill independent of waterpower and
allow all departments to be operated in stages of low water.
July 20, 1900
Anton Vandenberg of
Kimberly has been held for trial in circuit court on charge of mayhem. It is
alleged he bit the finger of James Kelly of Appleton in a fight at a Kimberly
dance recently.
The design of the new
$5 silver certificates issued last week by the treasury is the head of a
typical Indian chief in war paint and feathers.
July 27, 1900
The rural post offices
in this and other counties are surely doomed. The department intends to
discontinue more than a thousand during the coming year. Farmers will get their
mail delivered at their houses and the postal route will radiate from all the
larger towns.
Peter Helf of the Helf
Bros. Brewing company came near being seriously injured Tuesday. While driving
one of their heavy delivery wagons round the corner at Rose Hill struck an
obstacle and Mr. Helf was thrown by the roadside. Dr. Tanner was called and
revived him. With the exception of bruises on his face he was found all right.
