Reinier Van Dinter has rented
the confectionary store recently vacated by Anton VerKuilen from Jos. Koch, its
new owner and has opened a new, up-to-date ice cream parlor.
The Kaukauna Building and Loan association has
enjoyed a very prosperous year as was reported by Secretary Weifenbach. Weifenbach
announced there was increase of $23,656 over last year in loans and shares
issued. The total valuation at the end of 1921 is $318,400.00.
Longtime Kaukauna resident John Merbach, age 91,
has passed away. He had been a member of Company F, 6th Wisconsin infantry
during the Civil War, enlisting in 1864, well past the age of most of his confreres. At his funeral only three of his comrades were
well enough to attend. We have not many more G.A.R. funerals to attend.
January 12, 1922
The Rev. F. X. Steinbrecher will celebrate his 25th anniversary as pastor of St. Mary's Church on Tuesday, January 31. Appointed to a committee to carry out the necessary arrangements for a jubilee celebration are Louis Mayer, Louis F. Nelson, and M. N. Haupt. The Right Reverend Paul B. Rhode, Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay will attend the services on January 31st.
One of the biggest and best “stunts” of its
kind ever given in this vicinity will be pulled off in Kaukauna next Wednesday
at the Bijou theater when William Van Lieshout, authorized Ford dealer, will
give an expedition of the Ford companies best known products. Farmers have been
notified within a radius of 10 miles from this city inviting them to bring
their families to Kaukauna to witness the exhibition and hear expert talks and
lectures. He has secured 75 good prizes which will be awarded to the holder of
lucky numbers. Virtually every business house in the city has given him a prize
to award.
During the month of December 648 school children
were examined for physical defects by Miss Walsh the new city nurse. of this
number 197 were found perfect, 451 we're in need of medical attention. Because
of danger of contagion eight children were excluded from school.
January 19, 1922
On Sunday a meeting was
held at St. John's Catholic Church for the purpose of electing trustees for the
year. John A. Gloudemans and Henry Bongers, Sr., received the largest number of
votes and will serve as the trustees for the current year.
January 26, 1922
The members of the
Young Ladies Society of St. John's Church at their meeting elected the following
young ladies to conduct the affairs for the year. Prefect, Anna Molitor; Assistant
Prefect, Marie Coppus; Secretary, Emma Mirion; Treasurer, Gertrude Williamsen.
Rome, January 21 – Benedict XV, the
259th sovereign pontiff of the Church of Rome, died late today at the Vatican. he
had lapsed into delirium earlier in the day and failed to recognize anyone at
his bedside.
John Schmidt, president of the Farmers and Merchants
bank, was routed from his bed last Thursday morning by a telephone call and to his
surprise found that the call came from Little Rock, AR, from a friend. In spite
of the long distance between this city had Little Rock, he was able to hear as
distinctly as though they were in the next house.
