April 3, 1974
Five area young persons were killed Friday
night in a two-car crash on highway 55 at Lau Rd. north of Kaukauna.
Dead are Scott L. Ellis, 19 Kaukauna.
Wayne R. Ellis, 15, his brother.
Richard M. Lenhart, 17 Kaukauna.
William J. Van Eperen, 22 Kaukauna.
A sixth youth Donald Braum, 18 Black Creek,
survived the crash but is in critical condition Monday at St. Elizabeth
hospital.
Outagamie county Coroner Bernard Kemps stated
that the Van Eperen car was southbound on 55 while the car operated by Scott
Van Ellis was traveling west on Lau Road. Kemps added that this crash was one
of the worst in the county’s history.
April 5, 1974
Mrs. Joan Cleveland became the new city
clerk Tuesday.
Reginald Van De Hey, a newcomer to politics
and city government was elected to the city’s second ward.
Wayne Lennert retained his post as Kaukauna city
assessor.
Mayor Robert LaPlante was voted last week to
a second term in office.
April 10, 1974
The highest award in scouting, the Eagle Award,
was conferred upon four Kaukauna youths at a Court of Honor for Holy Cross
Parish Scout Troop 31. The scouts include Neil De Bruin, Eric and David
Vandenberg and Ray Harvey.
With a standing room only crowd in excess of
52,000 fans, a nation-wide television audience witnessed Hank Aaron immortalize
himself in baseball history by hammering his 715th career homer in
Atlanta Monday night, breaking Babe Ruth’s record of 714.
April 12, 1974
A grass fire apparently started by a passing
train brought one fire truck to the city’s north side Wednesday afternoon. The
Firemen used brooms to extinguish the blaze on highway OO.
April 17, 1974
The Kaukauna Finance committee tentatively
agreed to accept an offer from the Kaukauna Development Co. to sell to them
about 11 acres of former railroad property in downtown south Kaukauna. The cost
of the land would be $5,500 per acre.
At a morning worship at the Immanuel United
Church of Christ Mr. and Mrs. Howard Veldman were recently presented with a
plaque recognizing their many years of Leadership in the Scouting movement.
April 19, 1974
Members of the Kaukauna
Council 1033 will be selling candy this weekend. Half the proceeds remain in
local areas and the other half goes toward the national program to help
retarded children. Decked out in official aprons for the K of C’s are Lance
Goetzman, Clay Wildenberg, Frank Napieralla and Carl R. Runte.

Derby were honored at a meeting of Cub Pack 27, St. Mary’s. Pictured with scout
master Bill Fritz are Ken Zirbel, Shawn Eisch, and Tim Huss.
The Kaukauna Public Library will be having a
double celebration during this week. Not only is this National Library Week,
but also marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of library service in Kaukauna. This
week in 1899, the library was organized under the leadership of Dr. H. B.
Tanner.
