Time Machine Trip to November 1966

November 2, 1966
At their October meeting the Kaukauna Board of Vocational-Technical-Adult education affirms its commitment to the laws of Wisconsin. The board unanimously agreed that an area concept of adult education should be established in the greater Fox Valley area. Bordini said: The greater Fox Valley accomplices all the nine school districts in Outagamie County, seven districts in Waupaca County, four districts in Calumet County, two districts in Winnebago County and one district in Brown County. 

The Kaukauna high school football team showed a potent offense and rugged defense Saturday as they rolled over the Kimberly high school Papermakers by a score of 27-6 at Kimberly. The Ghosts scored the 1st 4 times they had the ball to wrap up the game early. Coach Harry Wilson's team averaged over 281 yards per game at total offense and scored 183 points to opponents 43 on the way to a 7–1 record this season.

November 4, 1966
Recently the city presented Mrs. Joseph Bayorgeon with the gavel her late husband had used to preside over Council meetings. “May you keep this always as the city of Kaukauna's symbolic memory of your late husband – Joseph F. “Doty” Bayorgeon.

Well drillers on a farm near Askeaton Wednesday pondered the ancient geology of our area, when their drill bit began turning up woodchips 50 feet below the surface. “We drilled through a log that must have been 2 feet thick” the wood has Tamarack”, George Bruecker the landowner stated.  “perhaps a relic of an ancient swamp that became buried when the glacier passed over.”

Bob Derus was elected president of the Fox Valley Golf Club at the board of directors meeting Wednesday. He succeeds Robert Minkebige, president for the last 2 years.

The Green Bay Packers (7-1-0) strengthen their hold on 1st place in the NFL’s Western division with a 31-7 victory over the Detroit Lions and now face the invasion of the Minnesota Vikings Sunday. Elisha Pitts enjoyed his biggest day in several years rushing for 99 yards in 21 attempts and scoring 2 touchdowns. Coach Lombardi remarked “We didn't rush very well last year but the rushing game is starting to come around.” The aerial attack continues to excel as Bart Starr hit on 11 of 13 passes behind perfect protection.

November 9, 1966
Bill Schiefelbein rocked a 284 single and a 637 series in leading the keglers Sunday night at the Bowling Bar.

    
Funeral services were held Tuesday for two Kaukauna youths who died after their car left the road on a curve on Outagamie County Trunk ZZ, two miles east of Kaukauna Sunday morning. Gary Buss, and Patrick Coffey were the accident victims.

November 11, 1966
The open house dedication of the new Electa Quinney School, the most recently completed educational complex in the school district, will be from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13. Electa Quinney is located on the south side of Kaukauna, bordered by Ann Street, Sullivan Avenue, and St. Mary's Place. It is a single-story structure, on 35 acres, four and a half of which consist of a wooded area suitable for a park. The cost of the
facility was S1,250,000.

Fifty-eight candidates turned out for the KHS wrestling team according to head coach Don Jensen. Of this number, 20 were on the team last year.

November 16, 1966
Kaukauna high school will open their 1966-67 basketball campaign with a pair of games this weekend. Friday night the Ghosts will play West Bend and on Saturday will travel to Fond du Lac to take on Goodrich High School. Coach Vander Velden hopes to start off his season on the right foot by scoring a double victory.

The Kaukauna High School JV football team ran their three-year unbroken streak to 14 games after finishing the season with a perfect 6-0 record. Coach Dallas Warner now has a career record with the JV squad of 31 wins and 5 losses.

Santa Claus will enter Kaukauna Friday, November 24, at 1pm on a fire truck. Santa is expected to arrive at the high school parking lot where he will distribute candy to the children.







Miss Francis C. Corry - Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's church. Miss Corry, Kaukauna High School's teacher of English for 39 years, who died Thursday afternoon after a short illness. She had retired last June.




November 22, 1966
A courageous effort by the Kaukauna High basketball team brought them victory in overtime as they defeated Fond du Lac 89-88 in a game played Saturday. The Ghosts almost didn't make the overtime period. Trailing 84-82 with less than 10 seconds left in the game, they brought the ball up the floor for one last shot. Pat Kavanaugh was called upon to make the shot and iced a 15-foot jumper to tie the game at the final buzzer. In the overtime, Fond du Lac scored first then Quinn Vanden Heuval drove through on the three-point play to put the Ghosts ahead for good.

November 24, 1966
Practice for the girls wishing to try out for the 1966-67 Tumbling Team was held this past week, according to team advisor Miss Shelby Lemke.

The Kaukauna High School wrestling team opened their season on a successful note as the team downed Ashwaubenon High School by a 52-0 score. Gary Cartman won the 95-pound match, Mike Pomeroy won the 103-pound match, Dan Siebers won the 112-pound match, Tom Bay won the 127-pound match. Al Hartzheim won the 133-pound match and Sam Beach won the 138-pound match.

November 30, 1966
Giddings and Lewis, chairman of the board and chief executive officer Ralph J. Kraut, in a speech before a New York group last week, anticipated that 1966 will be a record year for the company.  Kraut told the group of analyst that shipments this year will top 75 million and that next year's business could be up as much as 20%. The Giddings and Lewis plant in Kaukauna is home of the world's largest plant devoted to the exclusive manufacture of heavy duty drilling machines.

Army Private First Class Terry A. Hella, 20, of Combined Locks, Wis., arrived in Viet Nam with his unit, the 100th Engineer Company. Pvt. Hella, a bridge specialist in the company, entered the Army in January of this year.
