Plans for Green Bay’s largest and most gala
parade in the city’s history are shaping up, in connection, with the
forthcoming Green Bay Packer stadium dedication this weekend.
The second annual college All-Star basketball
game for college ball players from the area will be held Aug. 6 at the Kaukauna
High School Gym. The Kaukauna Recreation department sponsored the event. Fred
Barribeau team supervisor stated the game will be open to the public at no
charge.
Transportation problems for Kaukauna residents
who have relied on the Appleton Intercity bus lines to bring them to and from
Appleton has been solved. After the Appleton line was scheduled to cease
operation Mayor Bayorgeon in some last-minute negotiations arranged with Elwood
Kobussen who handles the school busses to set up a substitute bus line.
Pvt. Richard W. Nushart of Kaukauna recently
graduated from the Army’s Automotive Maintenance School at Fort Chaffee, Ark.
August 7, 1957
Pat Coffey, Jerry Cotrell, Tim Femal, Dave
Schommer and Bill VanderPas were the winners in the boys 1957 archery
tournament by the recreation department.
The Kaukauna Community hospital was the
recipient last week of some very welcome gifts. A $500 check was received from
the Combined Locks Paper Company and a $300 check in memory of Jerry Thomas of
Detroit, Mich.
August 16, 1957
New head football Coach Fred Barribeau of the
Kaukauna high school announced that football equipment will be issued to
candidates for the 1957 varsity squad this Thursday and Friday.
August 21, 1957
The Kaukauna Junior American Legion baseball
team did an effective job against Neenah in a 6-3 win. Playing heads-up ball,
the Kaws lead 5-0 going into the 6th. Back-to-back doubles by Jerry
DeBruin and Gary Senso in the bottom of the 3rd and Tony Van Zeeland
reached base by getting winged with a pitch. DeBruin’s double scored Van
Zeeland.
August 23, 1957
The Green Bay Packers will travel to Austin,
Texas to engage the Chicago Cardinals in the second of two meetings. Last Friday the Packers
defeated the Cardinals in Miami’s Orange Bowl by the score of 24-16. The
Packers finished last year with a tie for last place with Los Angeles. Only
nineteen players remain on the team from last year with sixteen new faces.
Four Kaukauna men are graduates of recruit
training. Glenn Weyenberg, Robert Lamers, Robert Granger and Cletus Feldkamp
all graduated from the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
Last year the Polio outbreak in the city
resulted in a total of 12 cases. This year the city reports not a single case.
In the 1955 outbreak which reached epidemic proportion the total number of
cases were 42.
Royalty of the annual summer playground year were crowned
at the Kiddie Karnival. Queen Linda Speener and King George Simon, Jr., were
named from all the city playgrounds. In their court were the following Princes
and Princesses: Front, Mary Derks, Christy Mengarelli and Susan Granger. Middle
row, Sally Krueger, Bob Hennes, Dan Van Wychen, Eddie Jansen, Sandy Pomeroy,
Jane Ann Vandenberg, Gary Pomeroy, Mary Kay Verbeten, Gary Anderson, Jackie
Reichel, Glen Onkels, Chris Defferding and Tony Giordana.
