Time Machine Trip to September 1959

September 2, 1959
The 27 girls of the Kaukauna High School class of 1942 held their 17th annual reunion, August 27, at Babe Van Camp’s Supper Club, where they met for a 7 pm dinner, cards and read letters on those who couldn't be there.

The Kaukauna girls’ softball team finished their season with two wins to give them a final 8-2 record. The girls defeated Omro 14-8 and downed the Kimberly-Clark team 15-7. Judy Jacobson started as the pitcher in the Kaukauna/Omro game and was relieved in the fifth by Mary Nienhaus who received credit for the win. The Kaukauna nine scored 11 runs on 12 hits, Marilyn Hilgenberg, Judy Borree and Mary Nienhaus slap triples for the winners.


GOLF CHAMPIONS at the Fox Valley club for 1959 are Bob Derus, winner for the tenth time and Mrs. Robert (Kate) Bootz, first time champion. 

Hundreds of spectators lined the banks of the Fox River Sunday afternoon as the Wisconsin Stock Utility Outboard races were held under this sponsorship of the car, boat club.

In the second row are: Harold Gast, Jr., Mike Nagan, Joe Mayerl, Jeff DeBruin, Merle Hammond, Jim Zuelzke, Vince Mach and Gary McGoey. In the rear are Jerry Jakl, Milo Straus, Bill Borcherdt, Mark Oliva, Leigh Wachel and Tom Kuchelmeister.  

While the prayer to God for peace in the world was the main purpose of the holy hour here Monday night, the spectacle was impressive.  A crowd of 5000 filled the bleachers and rimmed the high school athletic field forming a reverent, living outline for the event. At the sound of the trumpets the procession walked down the center of the open area. 150 altar boys in cassocks of red and white or black and white along with 25 priest in red vestments.

September 9, 1959   
Two Kaukauna young people were injured, one critically in an auto collision Sunday afternoon near the intersections of County trunk A and S near Appleton. Injured were Miss Patricia Hawley and Donald Phillips both of Kaukauna. Ms. Hawley is listed in critical condition and Phillips is listed in fairly good condition.

September 11, 1959   
A large Unite States Flag with only 45 stars was a surprising find by two men removing the cupola from the Kemp building on Lawe Street last week. The 8 foot flag was raised there on national holidays until 1907. The flag was from 1896 when Utah was made a state.

Winners of the fishing derby held recently by the Kaukauna recreation department and the Rod and Gun Club. Left to right John Mooney, Greg Schuh, James Erdman, Steve Kappell, Barbara Schommer, Lynn Mitchler and Ron Kappell.

The issuance of two new home building permits during the month of August has raised the total number to date for 1959 to 40 according to city engineer Lothar Kemp. As of the end of August last year a total of 36 home permits were issued. 

Two girls and two boys, now in the senior class, attended Badger Girls’ and Badger Boys’ State this summer. The girls were Jane Barribeau and Judith Haen. They were on the University of Wisconsin campus at Madison in June. Attending the Boys State at Ripon were Dwight Bastian and Thomas Verhagen.


Karl Wundrow, 7, died Monday evening as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by an auto on County trunk N about a half mile south of Kimberly. The youngster was going across the road to show one of his playmates a new pair shoes he had just received and although he waited for a truck to pass before going onto the road, he failed to look the other direction from which a car was coming. He is survived by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

THESE SOBER-FACED YOUNGSTERS are not waiting for the doctor to say “next” for a shot or have they heard school will remain in session all next summer. The above scene takes place throughout the summer when they are required to leave the pool due to storm clouds over head.
   
Individual game tickets for the Green Bay Packers final three games to be played at the city Stadium are now available from Art Mongin Packer director and ticket source for Kaukauna and the surrounding area. The tickets for the Packers home opener with the Chicago Bears have been sold out for a couple of months. 
 
September 18, 1959   
A/1C Carl H. DeBroux, Gertrude St., was selected as the 2955th AACS Squadron Airman of the Month for July, due to his splendid performance on and off the job. Airman DeBroux recently received a letter of commendation from the squadron commander for the splendid job he did in conjunction with children's day at Itauke Air Base.    
  
September 23, 1959    
Herman J. Stark, 77, Little Chute, former president and director of the Bank of Little Chute, died at his home Tuesday morning. He was born March 20, 1882, in Little Chute.

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts Saturday evening spotted the invading Golden Raiders of Sheboygan North six points midway in the third period as a result of two fumbles by the Ghosts. Kaukauna stormed back in the fourth quarter with two TDs and an extra point to cop a 13-6 win in the non conference opener at the Electric City Bowl. 
  
September 25, 1959       
Lieut. Col. Robert J. Courtney, Grignon St., has been appointed commander of Appleton's flight C of the 9661st Air Force reserve squadron. Col. Courtney was a pilot in World War II and has been in the Air Force reserve for seven years.

Lieut. Thomas Hilgenberg received his Silver Wings on September 1 at ceremonies at Craig Air Force Base, Selma Alabama. He is now a pilot flying jets.
