Kaukauna Times - By Lyle Hansen
October 2, 1919
Mr. Banker’s shoes are fifty-five years old,
having been given to him by his Uncle Sam when he left the army at the close of
the Civil War. They are a very comfortable looking pair of shoes and Mr. Banker
has taken mighty good care of the souvenirs of his youth.
On Sunday Sept. 14, our returned soldiers,
sailors and marines were officially welcomed home through the mayor, which was
a most commendable and splendid thing to do. Some 200 ex-service men were
royally entertained at the Kaukauna Gun Club grounds where gamed and feasting
were indulged in. Certificates of appreciation were presented by the mayor.
When our country went out a call for nurses to
do duty on the battlefield five of Kaukauna’s young ladies answered the call.
Misses Rena and Dorothy Brewster, Elena Maher, Mary Kowalke and Claire Fell
braved the perils and never once flinched in the duty upon them.
A.H. Stiegelbauer of Appleton was fined $5.00
and costs in Justice Mulholland’s court for knocking down the dummy policeman
which stands at the corner of Third Street and Crooks Avenue.
A kermess dance will be held Watry’s hall,
Little Chute, Monday evening, October 6th. Mill’s orchestra of this
city will furnish the music. A royal good time promised to all.

The Kaukauna High School team played the West
DePere team last Saturday in this city and took revenge for the loss they
suffered last week to the Marinette team. The ground was muddy, but the crowd
of spectators got more than their money’s worth. Art Redman and Stanley McCarty
did some very clever work and the whole team made a strong showing. Winning the
game 53-0.

The Kaukauna High School football team met a
disastrous defeat last Saturday at Green Bay when the Green Bay Highs won the
game by a score of 72 – 0. Green Bay
started with a trick play that brought a touchdown. Delbridge, Kaukauna quarterback
was laid out and Smith taking his place. This was the first time Smith had
played quarterback not used to work of that position. Schrader was also laid
out and compelled to leave the game. The injuries suffered by players in our
backfield explained the one sidedness of the game. The Times was informed that
the game next week against Waupaca has been cancelled as result of the team
injures.
