May 2, 1941
Fishermen were bragging about their catches in
Wisconsin before Columbus discovered American. A boastful picture scratched on
the wall of a cave on Jackson county by some Indian of a long ago shows a fish
with a man riding on its back. Wisconsin had no fish of that size, qualifying
the unknown Indian as the first recorded big fish story.
May 7, 1941
Alphonse Joseph Faust, Tobacnoir street, was
accepted for enlistment in the naval service. He is now in Great Lakes naval
training station in Ill.
According to city ordinance the use of .22
caliber rifles, air guns or any other guns in the city limits is prohibited.
However, a West Eight Street resident had an experience the other day with a
couple of woodpeckers. Each morning at the crack of dawn the pair began their
attack on an oak tree near his home. After losing too much sleep he took
matters in hand and shot the pair. He reported the incident to the police and
no arrest followed.
May 14, 1941
William Mitchler, Jr., 16, Oviatt Street
suffered second degree burns about the legs and abdomen when his
gasoline-soaked clothing caught fire Sunday afternoon at the Nole Service
station on Lawe Street. He had just filled a car and had spilled on his
clothing. The gasoline ignited when he entered the station and leaned against a
lighted cigarette. He was rushed to St.
Elizabeth hospital in Appleton where he was treated and returned home Monday.
May 16, 1941
Phil Zwick, 35 years of age will have his first
crack at the world title and has been working hard. He will have no problem
meeting the weight requirements as he scaled between 126 and 127. Scalzo, 26
years of age has been working hard to stay in the weight requirements. Kaukauna
and the Fox River Valley will be well represented at Milwaukee next Monday night
at the feather weight championship match between Petey Scalzo of New York and
Kaukauna’s Phil Zwick.
May 21, 1941
The public is invited to be at the depot this
afternoon to welcome Phil Zwick home. A banquet and program are planned to
honor our hometown hero. Phil participated in the championship fight before a
crowd of 7500 fight fans at Milwaukee Monday evening in which Petey Scalzo of
New York won the 15-round decision to retain his world featherweight title.
May 23, 1941
Robert Rolf, aged 11, West Second. St. is
confined to St. Elizabeth hospital, Appleton, suffering from injuries received
when he ran into the path of a car Wednesday evening. Robert, along with two
other youths, Joseph Kappel, Jr., age 10 and Lyle Fink, age 12, were running
across Tobacnoir Street.
Andrews Oil company was awarded the contract to
furnish two tires for the fire truck by the common council Tuesday evening.
Andrews’ bid was $93.60 the only other bid amounted to $113.62.
Herman A. Baier was recently elected
president of the Kaukauna Lions club to succeed J. W. Weyenberg. This year is
the fifth anniversary of the charter.
May 28, 1941
Mayor William Gantter suffered minor cuts on his hand when his car struck a horse on Highway 55 about five miles south of here Thursday evening. The horse, which was crossing the road was killed outright.
Cadet Clifford Rohan, route 2 Kaukauna, has
completed flying school at Brooks Field.
