Impressive ceremonies
marked the celebration of the silver jubilee at St. Mary's Church Tuesday, in
honor of the Rev. F. X. Steinbecher, pastor. An elaborate program was given in
the church basement at the start of which Rev. F. X. Steinbecher was presented
with a paid contract for a Buick sedan by the people of his parish as token of
their esteem and to show their appreciation of his pastoral work since he has
been with them.

The family was away from town and left the
house in charge of a young maid. One day the maid opened the front door and was
greeted by an angry woman. “I’ve been ringing, and ringing said the woman. Why
didn’t you answer the door?” “You kept on ringing and ringing so I thought it
was the telephone.”

The worst storm ever
experienced in this vicinity, raged over Wisconsin Tuesday and Wednesday, and
is still blowing a gale, though its forces today somewhat abated. Not within
the past thirty years has such destruction been wrought by snow and sleet.
Trees throughout the city were broken down, the slow growth of many years being
ruthlessly destroyed in a few hours. Many narrow escapes from injury have
taken-place, pedestrians who narrowly missed being caught in some falling tree.
Wisconsin Avenue presented a strange sight Wednesday evening, with the trees
broken or bent double to the ground and innumerable wires hanging from
telephone and light poles. What was true of that section was also true of the
rest of the city.
Number 216, south-bound passenger train went
into the ditch at Little Chute last night resulting in injury to three of the
train crew. The train was being pulled by two “E” engines and due to the ice
and snow on the rail switch the resulted in the train riding off the tracks.
Telegraphic
communication with the outside world was only possible through Appleton aid
Wednesday, messages being relayed to this city by telephone or by messenger,
but even that connection is now broken.
The damage inflicted by
the storm is beyond calculation, the loss running far up into the millions and
irreparable damage being done to the shade trees.
Myron Esler, 12, received a broken right arm
and cuts Tuesday noon while coasting with his playmates.
The city is to have a new high school, but this
new school will be without an auditorium and “gym”. The majority of the school
board and common council decided that the city was too heavily bonded at this
time.

The Wisconsin Telephone Company officials have
shown a remarkable fast work in repairing the system following the ice storm. A
crew of about thirty-five repair men showed up yesterday. Some of the men came
in bob sleighs and other with cars and fifteen came by train. Practically every able-bodied man in the city
has found work the last few days and while the storm has caused damages
millions of dollars in damage in the area thousands of men have found
employment as result.
