June 4, 1973

At this time this day 29 years ago, Pvt. Arthur Schmidt was wading through water on Normandy, France and was being shot at. Schmidt, an infantryman with Co. E of the 4th Infantry division was one of 2,876,439 troops who came to land in France. Arriving by sea and air on D-Day, June 6, 1944. We were training in England for a long time before the invasion,” he said. There were two attempts before June 6, but both were aborted because of bad weather. My group landed on Utah beach “As we went ashore, I saw only one dead man half submerged in the water and there were gliders hanging in trees along with parachutes in the skies. Schmidt said that once off the beach he and his buddies crossed a stone wall and went through a flooded area as the defense. There were German marksmen and machine gun emplacements and we moved against heavy resistance. There were a large number of American casualties. 

 

Coach Harold Kobin said at the beginning of the season “it's going to be a tough year for us.” The lone exception was number four-man Ken Mischler on the tennis team, who immediately stepped into the number one spot and held it all year long. Ken earned the teams MVP award for the year.

 

June 8, 1973

Last Sunday Mike Chaganos took third place in the 12-year-old heavyweight division in the state judo tournament and earned the right to compete in the nationals which will be held in New York. Mike will enter 7th grade at Electra Quinney school this fall. 

 

S. J. (Fuzzy) Vandenberg, age 77, died unexpectedly Monday. He was born in Little Chute and was the former Chief of Police for the village until his retirement in 1961.

 

June 13, 1973

Louis E. Faust, head cashier at the Bank of Kaukauna, was selected as this year’s Honorary Citizen for the Town and Country Festivities.

Miss Chris Van Deraa, 17, has been selected by the Jaycees as “Miss Town ‘n Country Days” She is a junior at Kaukauna high school.

Until Monday night, Dave Vanderloop was a confirmed Chicago Cubs fan. But in the future the Chicago White Sox will be Dave’s team in more ways than just one. Dave was drafted in the eighth round of the professional baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox of the American Baseball League and signed a contract with the franchise Monday evening in his home. “Besides the job it's something I like to do,” the fleet footed former Kaukauna Ghost shortstop added.

Kaukauna city departments are beginning to feel the pinch of the gasoline curtailments which suppliers are levying on large contract users and as a result there will be no city vehicles left with their engines idling. Gasoline suppliers have notified the city that gasoline supplies will be curtailed by 20%.

 

June 15, 1973

Salary increases for three school administrators were passed by the joint Kaukauna district Board of Education Tuesday. Superintendent of schools Julian Bichler, principal Walter Schmidt, and business manager Thomas Nytes were granted pay increases of 4.5%. Mayor Robert LaPlante was one of 21 interested people who attended the meeting and was openly critical of the pay hikes.

 

Eugene E. Lakso, a teacher at Haen School, was named as one of the “Outstanding Elementary Teachers of the Year” for 1973.

 

June 20, 1973

Good things keep happening to the Kaukauna High School baseball team. Five players were picked for all-conference honors in the FVA. Dave Vanderloop, Jeff Gustman, Dan Newhouse, Dave Hash and Dale Broeren.

 

June 22, 1973

Scouting’s top award, the Silver Beaver, was presented to Howard Veldman of Kaukauna, who has completed 40 years with the Boy Scouts of America. 

 

90-minute parking for much of the Kaukauna business this trick was approved by the Kaukauna common council Tuesday night. The move was made in an attempt to eliminate large numbers of various time limits and different zones of the city.

 

June 27, 1973

Dutch Elm disease in Kaukauna has reached its peak according to the park and Forestry supervisor and as a result he asked residents who have trees with the disease or other problems to contact the city’s officials.

 

Five students from Kaukauna high school recently received the Presidential Physical Fitness awards. The students included Tina Klister, Jean Meyerhofer, Lynn Telford, Laura Twesme and Becky Wiegert each having completed the fitness test to qualify.

June 29, 1973

The shiny new 10 speed bike which provides quick, healthy, and pollution free transportation also have become increasingly popular even among preteens are becoming more popular every day with your local the neighborhood bike thieves. According to Kaukauna Chief of Police William Nagel 27 bicycles were reported to have been missing in 1972 and only two have been recovered.

Successful fishing in Canada is indicated by the catch of northern pike and walleyes. The local fishermen are Ron Vande Voort, Paul Karls, Glenn Hansen, and Lloyd Van De Hey.

June 5, 1963

Miss Lindy Kemp was announced as KHS Lang Trophy winner to climax 1963 Class Night exercises with 221 seniors graduating Monday evening. 


June 7, 1963

Ken Vander Velden has been named head basketball coach at Kaukauna High School. Vander Velden replaces Jerry Hopfensperger, who resigned to take a similar position at Preble High.

 

Two Kaukauna youths Paul Esler 15 and Robert Robach 16 died as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash Wednesday evening on County Trunk Q. 

 

Lightning bolts in a severe electrical storm and a car crash which claimed the lives of two Kaukauna youths got almost every type of emergency vehicle in and around the city of Kaukauna on Wednesday night. Lightning which struck the island St. bridge approached to the Wisconsin Ave. span required equipment and personnel of the Kaukauna Electric and Water departments the city fire department and gas company and the telephone company to repair the damage.

 

June 12, 1963

A yearling buck wandered into Kaukauna Saturday morning and got tied up in city traffic on the Southside of town. Taking a wrong turn on Third Street, the deer leaped through a plate glass window at Coffey Motors, 103 E. Third Street. The animal was finally subdued with ropes and a tranquilizing drug. The deer was released in the wild outside of town.

 

June 14, 1963

The 1963 “Papyrus” yearbook for the Kaukauna High School was dedicated to the late Adrian McGrath, who served as vocal music director at KHS until his death in April of last year.

Ray Morgan aced a hole in one on the 225-yard No. hole at Fox Valley Golf Club Sunday.

Kay Zummeren, 13, made a hole in one on the 125-yard No. 3 hole at Fox Valley Golf course Friday.

 

Paul Hietpas was named president of the Kaukauna Chamber of Commerce for 1963-64 at the June meeting held Tuesday according to Miss Mary Margaret DeClercq chamber secretary.

 

June 19, 1963


Members of the Silver Anniversary class of 1938, Kaukauna High School, gathered at Van Abel's Saturday evening. Forty-one of the original one hundred and seven were in attendance. Many awards were presented to the members and a good time was had by all.

Rev. Percy Gibson from the class of 1893, the first class to graduate from Kaukauna High School, attended the annual Alumni rally. Rally Master Robert Knox, Norbert Noie, Alumni president, and Joseph C. McCarty chairman of the board.

Class of '13 gathered at the rally. June 28, 1963

The 1963 American Legion picnic will be held for the first time on the outskirts of the City beyond highway “OO” adjacent to the new Legion club. In addition to the eight carnival rides there will be many stands on the midway.
