expected to save metal.

Sergeant Francis Vondracek, Kaukauna, was
awarded the distinguished service cross for heroism. Sergeant Vondracek led a
platoon in an attack near Buna on December 24.
Heavy fire stopped the platoon when he volunteered to knock out the three
enemy pillboxes which pinned down the platoon. Armed with grenades and assisted
by three riflemen covering him he crawled close enough to each of the Jap
pillboxes to hurl in the grenades and kill the enemy.
