January 5, 1934

A news item issued by the banking department at Madison will be of interest to our readers. The two banks in Kaukauna, the Bank of Kaukauna and the Farmers and Merchants Bank are among the banks of the state which have qualified to become members of the Federal Deposit Ins. Corp. Banks belonging to the FDIC have all deposit insured by the government up to $2,500.

An ice rink is being constructed at the St. Mary’s playground.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt last week was the recipient of a Christmas gift from Henry Vanden Boogard, Kimberly sculptor in the form of a wood carving of the president. He spent a total of 500 hours working out the design and fitting the frame to the piece. 






January 12, 1934

L. F. Nelson was re-elected president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank at the annual stockholders meeting on Tuesday evening.


Seven people, including three members of the Freedom high school basketball team were injured in an automobile crash on Hy 55 near Sherwood Friday evening.

Twenty-seven classes are being conducted in Kaukauna Federal Emergency Relief Administration program at the Kaukauna Vocational school. Six teachers have been employed teaching classes in physical education, needlework, plain and fancy sewing, play production and home nursing.


January 19, 1934

Kaukauna Klub is the name of the brand of cheese which is gaining popularity and is manufactured in Kaukauna at the South Kaukauna Dairy Company. Kaukauna Klub is the is gaining nationwide popularity. The cheese which was a local favorite in town for a long time has now become a favorite of thousands of people throughout the United States. The cheese has now been on the market for about six months according to Hubert Fassbender, manager of the South Kaukauna Dairy Company.

The newest addition to Kaukauna’s “great white way” was noted Saturday when the new lamps which have been installed between the Lawe street bridge and the new Canal bridge were lit for the first time.

 

George J. Meyer, Cudahy manufacturer who was charged in a federal warrant with hording $100,000 in gold, late Wednesday surrendered $90,000 in gold a few hours before midnight set by the treasury department.  Meyer, formerly of Kaukauna was allowed to withhold $10,000 in gold to make his payroll.


Goldin-Bergs leaders in the city basketball league will test their strength when they meet the Green Bay Packers at Little Chute legion hall. The Kaw team with seven straight leagues victoried will show their team strength.


January 26, 1934

Steve Andrews, Kaukauna heavy-weight boxer, won a technical knockout in the first round from Elmer “Tubby" Horn at Appleton last night.


Members of the Wisconsin Highway commission were at Little Chute Friday where they heard testimony in connection with the application of the village of Little Chute and Combined Locks for construction of a new bridge across the river between the two municipalities.


January 30, 1934

 

Tonight's the big night for the President Roosevelt Birthday Ball to be held at the Nitingale Ballroom. All reports show that the event will be a big success.
