2, 1934
The fire and police
commission decided to give three men of the fire department a three-month trial
as acting chief before making a permanent appointment. Owen E. Roberts will be
given the first month’s trial. Captain Henry Esler will be given the second
opportunity to act as chief and James McMorrow will be the third man to act in
the capacity.
March 6, 1934
A Boy Scout Charter has
been applied for by Scout Troop No. 31 which is sponsored by the Kaukauna
Council No. 1033 Knights of Columbus. James O'Connell is Scoutmaster and Orris
Schmalz, assistant. There are 18 scouts in the troop.
The Martin De Witt shoe store on East Second
street was the scene of a daylight robbery late this afternoon when a stranger
entered the store and said “Gimmie a dime or you’ll he minus a pair of shoes.”
At the same time, he took a pair of shoes and dashed from the store. Officer
Harold Engerson was in the area and caught the vandal. He said his name was the
“Montana Kid”.
Teams from thirteen Boy Scout Valley Council
participated in the annual first aid contest conducted at the high school
auditorium here Saturday afternoon before a capacity crowd.
March 13, 1934
Miss Dorothy Miller has been selected as
valedictorian of the 1934 senior class of the Kaukauna high school according to
an announcement made at the school. Miss Miller has maintained an average of
94.78 for the four-year high school course.
James W. Lang of this city, a junior at St. Norbert’s
College will play the part of Simon Legree in the play “Uncle Tom’s
Cabin.”
March 16, 1934
L. C. Wolf has the distinction of
having served the city of Kaukauna as its city clerk for the past thirty-six
years. Mr. Wolf was elected to that position in the election of 1898 and has
never since been defeated. In the election of April 3rd, Mr. Wolf will have
Lester J. Brenzel and Eathen A. Brewster for opposition.
Four candidates announced they are running for
mayor of Kaukauna.

Jerry Vils, captain and
forward, led the scoring for the Kaukauna High School basketball team for the
1933-34 season, scoring a total of 90 points in the 15 games played. Jim Schermitzler was second in line, scoring
44 points in the 15 games. The team scored 251 points to average 17 points per
game.
Cliff Kemp was elected president
of the Kaukauna High School alumni association which was organized in the high
school building Sunday afternoon. Edna Sager was elected secretary-treasurer. More
than one hundred graduates of the school attended the meeting. J. F. Cavanaugh
explained that twice previously a similar organization had been formed but lack
of interest spelled doom both times. Mr.
Cavanaugh believes, however, that the organization will continue to function
this time.
March 30, 1934
William Hass led
bowlers in the city league Tuesday evening by rapping a 633 series at the
Hilgenberg Alleys.
