May 2, 1975

Four Kaukauna students receive awards at UW-Oshkosh. Those receiving Phi Beta Sigma Awards from Kaukauna were Mary A. Benotch, Matthew T. Courtney, Ruth A. Jacobson and Cheryl A. Jaki.


A hall decorated with flowers and sounds of the Winnebago Lake Flies will be part of the Kaukauna Community Hospital employees’ charity ball this evening. What is being celebrated is the 20 years that have passed between the opening of the 38-bed hospital in 1954, and the modern 70-bed community facility of today.


Two area students will be among the students to graduate from UW Platteville, May 11. They are Steven A. Lemke and Richard J. Raymaker.


May 7, 1975

Booster Club President Tom Roberts left presents the trophy for the consolation championship to Janice Hammen, captain of Rich & Sally’s whose team won that honor. Carl Giordana right makes the third-place trophy presentation to Rose Benotch, captain of Countryside Golf Course.

The first official Bicentennial flag made its appearance at Joyces’ Bar on Second Street. The owner John Arnoldussen will fly the Bicentennial flag along with the American Flag and the 13-star flag. 


May 9, 1975

It wasn’t a big parade but a small procession which marched from the new municipal complex to Joyce’s Bar on Second Street and did a good job of kicking off the Bicentennial in Kaukauna. To the tune of “Yankee Doodle” the parade stopped at Joyce’s Bar where the VFW color guard assisted in setting the flags in place. Mayor Robert LaPlante made a short address, and the VFW fired three volleys.


May 14, 1975

Badger Northland’s Bob School gets around to a lot of places most people don’t go to. Places like Yugoslavia, Poland and Bulgaria. He has also traveled to Netherlands, France, England and Germany. Bob is the export manager for Badger Northland.

Mike Van Asten, Little Chute, has been named the recipient of the 1975 Shopko Marketing Scholarship. Mike is a senior at St. Norbert College.


The characters on a totem pole to tell the history of Kaukauna were described by Wally Mooney, who carved it, the pole was dedicated at the Grignon Home Saturday. The 35-foot totem pole is the 14th he has carved over the years.

 

May 16, 1975

Lions Club representatives Floyd Pendleton and George Simon present a check to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hohn, to help pay expenses incurred in caring for their daughter, Janis, 5, who lost an eye. The Lions club are dedicated to helping those with sight-related needs.


A combination Retirement and Appreciation Dinner will be held in Appleton. The two Kaukauna residents are teachers in the Kimberly school district. Mrs. Clarence (Miriam) Baumgartner will be retiring as kindergarten teacher after 16 years. Mrs. Michael (Mona) Weber has spent 13 years in Kimberly school district teaching special education classes.


May 21, 1975

Kaukauna has been designated a Bicentennial community, and the official charter and Bicentennial flag will be presented to the city in a ceremony at the War Memorial tomorrow.


May 28, 1975

Three holes in one have been scored at Fox Valley Golf Club in recent days. On Saturday a junior golfer, Scott Coenen, 16 hit a shot into the cup on 170-yard No. 14. On Thursday Wille Van Abel aced No. 14. Last Friday Harold Roloff had a hole in one on 145-yard No. 8.

 

May 30, 1975

DuWayne Gilcrest, Kaukauna High School senior, was presented with a scholarship award by guidance director Fred Barribeau. The scholarship is a four-year Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. 

The Sole Singers will have a Spring Concert at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Combined Locks Sunday evening. The Sole Singers have a group of 73 young people performing folk, spiritual and rock songs.

May 5, 1965

Kaukauna high School golf team racked up their second win of the season as the ghosts downed the Kimberly Papermakers 9-1 Monday at the fox Valley golf course. Terry McCarty of Kaukauna led both teams with a three over par 35 on the course.

Steven Andrejeski, Kimberly, has been elected chef de gare of the Outagamie County Voiture 1140 of the 40 et 8. 


A big representation of Kaukauna ladies turned out Monday to learn details of the Jubilee Belle contest. It is anticipated that the Kaukauna community spirit will support the contestants as they vie for vote credits through the sale of the official Jubilee booster buttons. 


During the first quarter of this year the Wisconsin motor vehicle Department announced that 8165 drivers in Wisconsin at the licenses taken away.


May 7, 1965

Queen Teresa Verhagen and King Donald Priebe and 133 couples danced to the music of Gene Heler Orchestra of Manitowoc at the annual Junior Prom last Friday evening in the KHS gym. The decorations and title “Mid-Summer Night's Dream” were very well assimilated.


The KHS track team, Tuesday afternoon, registered its fourth win against one defeat by downing Seymour 65 to 53 and a dual meet. Kaukauna made a clean sweep of the shot-put event by taking all three places, first place went to Promer, second place to Bay and third place to Kramer.


Dave O'Brien led the Kaukauna high school baseball team to a second win with his second consecutive no-hitter. O'Brien struck out 14 batters while walking 12 in the game.


May 12, 1965

The Ghosts slammed four events at G.B. Southwest. A new school as well as a new track record was set by Mike Baisch in the 100-yard dash at 10.5. He beat the old record set by Bob Benz in 1957 by six tens of a second.


Art Mongin, of Kaukauna, long time Packer director has been named to the steering committee of the fifth annual Bishop’s Charities football game. The game on August 14 will feature the Packers against the New York Giants at City Stadium in Green Bay.


Capt. Eugene Halbach, Sherwood, has been awarded the U. S. Air Force Medal at Tan Son Nhut Airfield, Viet Nam for aerial achievements. Capt. Halbach, a troop carrier pilot, won the award for his personal bravery and airmanship in the fight against communist aggression in Vietnam.

Joe Van Daalwyk, construction foreman, left Leo Van De Loo, treasurer and Don Beno, secretary, George Narovec, architect, Rev. Joseph Bauschka, Rev. Msgr. Peter A, Salm, pastor of St. Mary took part in groundbreaking at St. Aloysius Monday afternoon to start construction of the new eight classroom addition.


May 19, 1965

Leo Schmalz was named Pres. Elect of the Elks Association at its convention in Fond du Lac Saturday. He is a former state secretary, former exalted ruler and secretary for the Kaukauna Lodge. He has spent a total of 22 years in the various offices.


May 21, 1965

Vince Lombardi, Head Coach and General Manager of the Green Bay Packers, announced today that guard Fred “Fuzzy” Thurston has signed for the 1965 season. Thurston, hampered last year with injuries, is expected to make a fine comeback.  Fullback Jim Taylor has also signed for the 1965 season. Taylor is presently in third place in the all-time National Football League's individual rushing table with 6716 yards in seven seasons. Cleveland's Jim Brown hauls down the top spot but 10,768 yards.

Kaukauna’s Rialto theatre presented its last show this week at a site where movies have been exhibited for the past 55 years. The building was sold by Marcus theaters to a corporation owned by the Gustman interest here.  “We hated to give up the Rialto.” H. B. Tollette of Marcus theatres said Thursday, “But we could not operate successfully with running only on weekends.”

 

May 26, 1965

Dave Keough, a junior member of the Fox Valley Golf Club, fired and an ace on the 125-yard No. 3 hole last Saturday evening.  


The Kaukauna “Whiskered Gents” stockade has been ready and waiting for several days to be put into use. Summons has been issued to a dozen Kaukauna residents, and the public is invited to watch the fun of the Kangaroo Kourt with Judge Emmet Rohan presiding. The proclamation states, “Whereas all this is in good fun and for the promotion of the Jubilee.”


May 28, 1965

Twin brothers, Father David L. Van Stralen and Father Donald J. Van Stralen, will be ordained into the priesthood Saturday morning May 29 at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay. Bishop Stanislaus V. Bona will confer the sacrament of Holy Orders. Father Donald will celebrate his first solemn mass at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 30 at St. Mary's Catholic Church Kaukauna. Father David will offer his first solemn mass there at 5 p.m. The twins will participate in each other’s masses as deacon. Rev. John G. Van Der Horst of Kaukauna will offer his first at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Monday morning May 31.

Kaukauna High School Student Council was chosen in an all-school vote Wednesday.  Candidates included Joan Hartjes, Karlett Kuehn, Vice President Alice Van Zeeland and President Sue O’Connor.
