Four Kaukauna students receive awards at
UW-Oshkosh. Those receiving Phi Beta Sigma Awards from Kaukauna were Mary A.
Benotch, Matthew T. Courtney, Ruth A. Jacobson and Cheryl A. Jaki.
A hall decorated with flowers and sounds of the
Winnebago Lake Flies will be part of the Kaukauna Community Hospital employees’
charity ball this evening. What is being celebrated is the 20 years that have
passed between the opening of the 38-bed hospital in 1954, and the modern
70-bed community facility of today.
Two area students will be among the students to
graduate from UW Platteville, May 11. They are Steven A. Lemke and Richard J.
Raymaker.
May 7, 1975
Booster Club President Tom Roberts left
presents the trophy for the consolation championship to Janice Hammen, captain
of Rich & Sally’s whose team won that honor. Carl Giordana right makes the third-place
trophy presentation to Rose Benotch, captain of Countryside Golf Course.
The first official Bicentennial flag made its
appearance at Joyces’ Bar on Second Street. The owner John Arnoldussen will fly
the Bicentennial flag along with the American Flag and the 13-star flag.
May 9, 1975
It wasn’t a big parade but a small procession
which marched from the new municipal complex to Joyce’s Bar on Second Street
and did a good job of kicking off the Bicentennial in Kaukauna. To the tune of
“Yankee Doodle” the parade stopped at Joyce’s Bar where the VFW color guard
assisted in setting the flags in place. Mayor Robert LaPlante made a short
address, and the VFW fired three volleys.
May 14, 1975
Badger Northland’s Bob School gets around to a
lot of places most people don’t go to. Places like Yugoslavia, Poland and
Bulgaria. He has also traveled to Netherlands, France, England and Germany. Bob
is the export manager for Badger Northland.
Mike Van Asten, Little Chute, has
been named the recipient of the 1975 Shopko Marketing Scholarship. Mike is a
senior at St. Norbert College.
The characters on a totem pole to tell the
history of Kaukauna were described by Wally Mooney, who carved it, the pole was
dedicated at the Grignon Home Saturday. The 35-foot totem pole is the 14th
he has carved over the years.
May 16, 1975
Lions Club representatives Floyd Pendleton and
George Simon present a check to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hohn, to help pay expenses
incurred in caring for their daughter, Janis, 5, who lost an eye. The Lions
club are dedicated to helping those with sight-related needs.
A combination Retirement and Appreciation
Dinner will be held in Appleton. The two Kaukauna residents are teachers in the
Kimberly school district. Mrs. Clarence (Miriam) Baumgartner will be retiring
as kindergarten teacher after 16 years. Mrs. Michael (Mona) Weber has spent 13
years in Kimberly school district teaching special education classes.
May 21, 1975
Kaukauna has been designated a Bicentennial
community, and the official charter and Bicentennial flag will be presented to
the city in a ceremony at the War Memorial tomorrow.
May 28, 1975
Three holes in one have been scored at Fox
Valley Golf Club in recent days. On Saturday a junior golfer, Scott Coenen, 16
hit a shot into the cup on 170-yard No. 14. On Thursday Wille Van Abel aced No.
14. Last Friday Harold Roloff had a hole in one on 145-yard No. 8.
May 30, 1975
DuWayne Gilcrest, Kaukauna High School
senior, was presented with a scholarship award by guidance director Fred
Barribeau. The scholarship is a four-year Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps
scholarship to the University of Wisconsin.
The Sole Singers will have a Spring Concert at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Combined Locks Sunday evening. The Sole Singers have a group of 73 young people performing folk, spiritual and rock songs.
