The Wisconsin Telephone Company reported that
97 per cent of the people in Appleton, Kaukauna, Little Chute and Greenville
have voiced a favorable opinion on a toll-free arrangement between these areas.
The plan would provide for the elimination of the present 10 cent charge on
calls to these communities.
The maintenance operation and care of all locks
in the upper Fox River from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay will be discontinued
according to a proposal report from the Federal government. The principal reason
given was the cost to the government of $40,000 per year.
Phil Haas turned in what was probably his best
pitching performance in his baseball career Sunday at Freedom, when he struck
out 26 batters and gave up two hits to lead the Kaukauna VFW to a 5-2 opening
day triumph at Freedom.

R. H. McCarty, former police chief
and postmaster, has been appointed by Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon to fill the
unexpired term of B. J. Mitchka as justice of the peace when he submitted his
resignation to the city council Tuesday evening.
Rev. Paul Th. Oehlert, pastor of the Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran church observed his 40th anniversary in the
ministry Monday. Rev. Oehlert was installed as pastor here at Trinity Lutheran
church September 23, 1917.

Funeral services will be held this morning at
9:30 at Holy Cross church for Private Herman Promer who was killed in action in
the Normandy invasion. The remains of Private Promer arrived in Kaukauna Monday
morning and was met by the combined VFW and American Legion firing squad, color
bearers and other servicemen of the city. Promer was killed in France in 1944
when he was serving as a member of the 508 Parachute Infantry of the 82
Airborne division. He had been interned in a temporary military cemetery in
France and was returned to this country at the request of his parents.
The Wisconsin State Boxing Commission refused
to sanction a Phil Zwick-Willie Pep fight in Milwaukee on Monday due to the age
of Zwick. C. J. Hansen publisher of the Kaukauna Times sent a letter to the
Milwaukee Journal for publishing in the “From the People” column. “Phil Zwick
is a great fighter. He could fight Cabby Lewis before breakfast and Gomez after
lunch and then go to the gym for a workout.” “The boxing commission should be
interested in providing the fans with the best in boxing.” “Phil is a
professional boxer one of the greatest in his weight class.”
Hollandtown will celebrate its 100th
anniversary of its settlement by pioneers from Netherlands on June 6, 1848. The
official celebration this year will be July 17 and 18.
Harold Engerson, who has served as assistant
chief of police for the last four years has been appointed as acting chief to
fill the vacancy left by the recent resignation of James E. McFadden. McFadden
was chief for the past twelve years and a member of the force for 34
years.

George Lehman achieved the dream in every
golfer’s life when he scored a hole-in-one on the 125-yard hole at the Fox
Valley Golf course Saturday afternoon.

Dr. C. D.
Boyd
of Kaukauna has been awarded a gold lapel pin honoring him as a member of the
“50 Year Club” of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin. Dr. Boyd came to
Kaukauna on October 9, 1891. He was a graduate of Rush Medical school, Chicago.
He is recognized as an authority on long diseases and served as medical
director of the Riverview Sanitorium for the past thirty years.

Cliff Hinkens, Kaukauna
High School's ace miler, placed second in the State track and field meet held
Saturday in Madison. Kaukauna's only other entry in the meet was Lyle McGinnis,
who failed to place in the low hurdles.
The KHS twirlers Barbara Oudenhoven, Sharon
Goldin and Delores Vander Loop placed first at State in Madison last
Saturday.

John Wandell, chief torpedo man US Navy is one
of the men stationed aboard the USS Trumpetfish a submarine which sailed for
the British Isles last Friday.
