Morrill, Henry Olm, Dr. Robert McCarty, Jack Farwell, Les “lefty” Smith,
and Karl Rennicke; these were the six
names inducted into the Kaukauna High School Athlelic Hall of Fame Saturday
night at the All-Sports Banquet.
Captain Ronald P.
Vandenberg
is the Commanding Officer with the 826 Ordinance Ammo company of Madison, Wis.,
one of the units called up for active duty in the recent call up from
Wisconsin.
May 3, 1968
Christine Koch was recently named
Badger Girl for 1968. Chris, a Kaukauna high school junior was chosen to
participate in the annual week-long workshop in government along with 500 other
girls from Wisconsin in June.
The Kaukauna High School thinclads won their
first dual track meet of the season Tuesday over the Menasha Bluejays 66 ½ - 50
½. Mark Tatro the only double winner for the Ghosts who copped eight firsts to
Menasha’s six. Tatro led the pack in both the low and high hurdles and was
followed by Dan Flynn who followed close behind Tatro.
May 10, 1968
The Department of Housing and Urban Development
in Washington D.C., Thursday authorize the grant of $1,051,408 to the City of
Kaukauna for the construction of the 74-unit housing development for low income
families. Mayor Gilbert Anderson got the word in a call from the office of Sen.
Gaylord Nelson. Kaukauna is the first community in this part of the state to
get the go-ahead on this kind of a project.
May 15, 1968
Stanley Plzak, Kaukauna, is among nineteen
students and the Army reserve officer training Corps (ROTC) unit at the
University of Wisconsin in Madison were presented with awards for their
outstanding work in the military training and studies.
May 17, 1968
Dick Jerow, Kaukauna, scored a hole-in-one on
the 35-yard water hole at the new Fox Valley Golf Club Saturday, the first ace
to be scored on this hole.
Vernon Meulemans, Wrightstown, was crowned the
singles champion in the 22nd annual City Championship Tournament of the
Kaukauna Bowling Association. Meulemans ended up with a 710 series.
Leo Haen, Kaukauna, elected president of the
Kaukauna Lions Club at their meeting Tuesday at the Fox Valley Golf Club.
May 22, 1968
An alert off duty Kaukauna policeman, James
Egan, rescued a thirteen-year-old Kimberly youth on the island in the Fox River
Sunday afternoon. The youth, Jeff Huntington, had slipped and fell into the
river while walking along the bank with three companions. Strong currents
carried him downstream to one of the many islands in the area. As many
onlookers watched, Egan security a rope from the shore to the island then
crossed to the island using the rope. Eagan took two life jackets with him to
secure the youth.
May 28, 1968
The Kaukauna High School baseball team advanced
to a showdown with Menasha for the district baseball crown by defeating
Kimberly 3-2 at the London on Thursday.
May 30, 1968
Calvin Spice, Kaukauna, announced that he will
be a candidate for the Sheriff of Outagamie County in the fall election. Spice
is now undersheriff and has served two previous terms as sheriff in the County.
Spice has worked in the field of law enforcement for twenty-one years. He was a
member of Kaukauna Police Department from 1947 to 1953, when he joined the
Outagamie County traffic police force.
Army Private Jack Vander Sanden, 20, has been assigned
to the 2nd
Infantry Division in Korea.
Marine Private Mark
Mantei,
Kimberly, is going through recruit training at San Diego, Calif. Marine Corps
Recruit Depot.
Sp5 Dennis O. Kiffe, Kaukauna, was recently
promoted to his current rank in Headquarters Company 555 Combat Engineer Group.
Sp5 Kiffe is legal clerk for the company.
Marine PFC Thomas Schell, Kaukauna, is
participating in the weeklong amphibious training exercise “Beagle Leach” at
Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Five Kaukauna young men were among the
twenty-two inductees from Outagamie County into the U.S. Army on April 29. From
Kaukauna are Gary Kloehn, Gary Hostettler, John Hartl, Donald Blair, and Donald
Jansen.
Kaukauna’s new city
ambulance arrived last Friday. Shown by the new vehicle are left to right, Mrs.
George Hurst and Mrs. Gen Andersen of the GARD committee, Mayor Gilbert
Anderson and assistant health officer James Gertz.
State Bowling
championship was won by this group of Kaukauna Rotary club team who have the
joy of keeping the huge traveling trophy during this year. Left to right are
Mark Nagan, Carl Ploetz, Ernest Trude and C. L. Roy Reichert.
