Time Machine Trip to June 1959

June 3, 1959
General Manager and Head Coach Vince Lombardi announced the signing of George Dixon; the Packers ninth draft choice, of Bridgeport University. The 195-pound halfback was the leading ground gainer in the East last season finishing with 1106 yards gained with 7.14 per carry.  

Football scores are becoming a habit with the Kaukauna Klubbers who rolled off their third straight Fox Valley conference victory pasting Reedsville, 25-8. Joe Van Linn fanned 18 men in the win as the team hit three home runs with 17 hits. 

June 5, 1959
The fourth in the series of polio shots are being given to employees of the Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. this week, according to L. C. Smith the firm’s relations director. The two-day clinic is held under the direction of Thilco Chief Nurse, Mrs. Hazel Luedke.  

June 10, 1959
On Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. first summer concert by the Kaukauna high school band will take place in front of the high school building on Oak Street, according to an announcement made this week by Elwood Bleick, band director.
Admiring a milling machine purchased recently by the Kaukauna Vocational and Adult school are Dominic Bordini, left, school director and William Roerig, machine shop and welding instructor. The machine valued at $8000 was bought for $220 from government surplus.   


Owners of dogs were warned this week by Chief of Police Harold Engerson to keep their pets tied or confined at all times. Numerous complaints have been received at the Kaukauna Police Department of dogs running loose in the city, especially at night.
 
The Kaukauna Klubbers had to come from behind Sunday afternoon to claim a 3 to 2 decision over the Manitowoc Clippers and maintain their undefeated record in the Fox Valley league play at the Dodge Street diamond.

June 12, 1959
The Kaukauna Police Department investigated a total of 106 calls during the month of May according to chief of police Harold Engerson. 12 of the investigations were at the scene of accidents. The police escorted a total of 13 funerals, policed seven fire calls, and six public amusements.

General Manager and Head Coach Vince Lombardi has announced that the third draft choice quarterback Boyd Dowler of Colorado has returned his signed contracts to the Packer office. Dowler is expected to be switching to an end position to capitalize on his exceptional pass receiving. During the past two seasons he caught 37 passes for 567 yards in leading the Big Eight Conference. The Packers have also announced the signing of fallback David Smith 21st draft choice of nearby Ripon College and eighth draft choice end “Buddy” Mayfield of South Carolina.

George Greenwood was elected Grand Knight of the Council 1033 of the Knights of Columbus at the annual election of officers held Monday evening at the St. Mary's church Hall. He succeeds Richard Kuehn to the post.

Four Kaukauna man brought a 43 foot flush deck cruiser from near Buffalo N.Y. to Sister Bay Wisconsin via the Great Lakes is recounted by the cruiser’s owner Vince Roloff in the April edition of Lakeland Boating Magazine. Besides Roloff, Pres. of the Badger Northland Company, the crew consisted of Dr. Donald C. Kasten, Kaukauna optometrist, Wilbur Haass, secretary-treasurer of Badger Northland and Carl Kuehn executive VP of the Corporation.

June 17, 1959
The Kaukauna library board this week announced the appointment of a new head librarian, Roderick MacDonald of Excelsior Minn., who is expected to take over on Monday, August 27.

The Kaukauna Klubbers won their fifth game in a row defeating Appleton in the night game at Appleton last Sunday by a 4 to 2 count. Joe De Bruin notched the win with the aid of some fine relief pitching by Joe Van Linn who stopped in Appleton rally in the eighth inning. 

June 24, 1959
A bronze plaque, coveted award of Kaukauna high school Alumni Association, was presented to Guy R. Krumm, High school athletic director and science instructor, during the association's rally program Saturday evening at Van Abel’s Hollandtown. Joseph Sadlier, chairman of the Alumni advisory board made the presentation. The alumni award is given each year to a person or persons for their outstanding service to the high school and to their community. Coming to Kaukauna high school in 1939, he coached basketball from that year until 1947 when he assumed the position as head football coach. He has the distinction of being the only Kaukauna high school coach to have won both the basketball and football championships. 


Kindergarten graduates at Bethany Lutheran church in Kaukauna received their diplomas. The ten graduates are left to right: Front row, Linda Schaus, Susan Jansen, Barbara Guyette, Karen Peters and Debra Peterson. Second row, Alan Borchardt, Timmy Wendt, Phillip Kohne, Gregory Brandt and Gregg Carlson. 

The Kaukauna Klubbers nipped the Menasha Macs 10-9 to win their six straight conference game.

June 26, 1959
A Pine Wood derby highlighted the Cub Scout pack 20 meeting Monday evening at the VFW Hall. Prizes for the longest distance were won by Mike Hartzheim and Pat Johnson. Speed winners were Bruce Huss and Greg Schuh.
