March 2, 1982

Seeking donations for the Thousand Islands Environmental Center the center committee has instructed naturalist Lee Hammen to put together a list of items needed by the center. Topping the list would be insulating the restrooms, a large aquarium and a displace case for the large number of arrowheads. 

 


Rev. Edward N. Haessly, funeral services for Rev. Edward N. Haessly, 74, formally of Kaukauna will be held today at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna. Father Haessly was ordained on June 1,1933 and was the first parishioner from Holy Cross to be ordained. He said his first Mass at Holy Cross Church. Father Haessly died March 1 at a hospital in Manitowoc. 

 



March 4, 1982

During a lively “town hall” session in Appleton, Gov. Lee Dreyfus Wednesday explained his plan to temporarily increase the state’s sale tax to clear a state deficit and, in the future, to use the extra funds to offset property taxes.

 

March 9, 1982

Josh Renkens of Kaukauna has qualified for the Nationals in the Elk’s Hoop Shoot free throw shooting contest.

 

The proposal to close the Fox Locks come basically because the Fox operation is authorized for commercial operations and that volume is at zero according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

 

Norbert Jackels and his wife Sally, who has a farming operation southeast of Kaukauna has been named the 1982 Farmer of the Year.

 

March 11, 1982

Gregg Curry has become associated with the law firm of McCarty, Curry, Wydeven, Peeters & Riester. Curry graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in December of 1981 and joined the firm in January.

 

The Board of Education voted not to extend contracts to 24 teachers in the Kaukauna School System. Declining enrollments and a $250,000 spending reduction demand by the Fiscal Control Board were the main reasons.

Gubernatorial candidate Anthony Earl has laid the blame for state fiscal problems on the way that he says Gov. Lee S. Dreyfus took Wisconsin from its largest surplus in history to its largest deficit.

Corey VanDera, 10-year-old fifth grader at Haen school in Kaukauna, bowled a 240 game and a 520 series recently in the Junior Bowling League at the Bowling Bar.

 

Holy Cross held its first Career Day for students grades 1 through 8. The students were introduced to a variety of professions. Those sharing their expertise were Ken Heid, meat service; Dr. Stephen Dreier, chiropractor; Sergeant Robert Zimmerman, policeman; Stanley Dercks, fireman; Reginald Vande Hey, postman; Mrs. Sally Geenen, nurse; Dr. Gregory Russo, dentist; Clarence O’Connor, lawyer, Florence Brewster, secretary; Mark Kobin, pharmacist; Mike Weaver, banker; and Joan Cleveland, city clerk.

Alan D. Thiede has been appointed the position of Assistant Vice President at the F&M Bank in Kaukauna according to bank President Gail E. Janssen. 

 

March 23, 1982

Jim Viaene, a former Kaukauna High School Wrestler, took second place and all-American honors for the University of Wisconsin Superior in the NAIA wrestling tournament.


Even as imports of consumer goods into the U.S. are rising, sales of such items as American made machine tools still hold a heavy share of the items sold all over the globe. Giddings & Lewis of Kaukauna has a network of salespeople in several nations to handle the company’s sales.

William F. Appleton Jr., a lieutenant with the Kaukauna Police Department, has received his Bachelor of Science degree at Milton College where he majored in criminal justice.


March 25, 1982

Halting any further cutbacks in city services while trying to turn the local economy around in the name of the game for the next year or so, and Tom Schaffer and Ron Van De Hey, mayoral candidates on the April ballot, appear to agree that to do so will take a conservative outlook.

 

Josh Renkens, 9-year-old from Kaukauna, with his third-place plaque that he won at the National Elks Hoop Shoot free throw shooting competition. The event was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Josh sank 23 of 25 shots at the basket.

March 1, 1972

 

Clayton Vanden Broek, Kaukauna, was one of over a thousand successful sturgeon spearers during the season which ended Wednesday. The sturgeon is 68” long and weighs 100 pounds.


Kaukauna’s only hope at the state wrestling meet, Jerry Van Dyn Hoven, polished off the 1971-72 Mat season by bringing a 6th place finish back with him from the State Meet held last week in Madison.


Larry Verhagen, whose 40 years in the food business in Kaukauna date back to his days as the delivery boy for J. L. Anderson on Wisconsin Ave, is celebrating a big anniversary this week. Larry’s two supermarkets on Hy 55 and Hy 96 have put up the anniversary decorations and are launching a big sale and celebration.


In another effort to find a way to keep financially strained St. John’s High School to continue operation in Little Chute, a group of parishioners, working independently of the parish council, will canvas the village Thursday. They will attempt to get commitments for funds from citizens.

 

March 8, 1972

Al “Sonny” Wegand, Kaukauna, battled Wednesday’s snowstorm to go fishing at Two Creeks and caught this 33 ½ inch, 16 ¾ pound Rainbow trout.

 

Kaukauna police officers are investigating the theft of a newly purchased snow blower from the garage of a southside man and looking into the alleged incident of materials being removed from mailboxes in the city.

 

John F. Reynebeau, 69, a Little Chute businessman, on a four-day trip to Las Vegas, died in that city of an apparent heart attack shortly after arriving there Sunday. Reynebeau is the owner of Reynebeau Floral, Inc.  

 

March 10, 1972

Dave Anderson, Kaukauna's most sought-after college football prospect, has decided to attend the University of Wisconsin next fall.

 

This Sunday 300 Kaukauna Girl Scouts and their leaders will begin Girl Scout Week 1972 by attending masses and services at their respective churches. Throughout the week the scout troops will display their projects and badge work at some of the Kaukauna businesses.

 

March 17, 1972

Robert F. Main, 59, funeral services were held Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Main was a long-time member of the Kaukauna Police Department.  Main, who died Sunday morning at the Kaukauna Community hospital had joined the Kaukauna Police Department in 1937 as a patrolman and motorcycle officer. He was promoted to sergeant in 1946 and to lieutenant in 1957. He retired on April 15, 1968, after 31 years of service with the department.

 

General support was indicated Wednesday evening for a joint community sewage system, which would use the Kaukauna wastewater treatment plant as the site for handling waste from the city along with Little Chute, Kimberly, and Combined Locks.

 

March 22, 1972

Senator Hubert Humphrey met with students as he left Kaukauna High School following his address there late Tuesday morning.

 

March 31, 1972

Maine Senator Edmund Muskie brought his campaign caravan through a snow-covered Fox Valley Wednesday. He spoke at Kimberly High School. Muskie disputed claims by President Richard Nixon that the war in southeast Asia is winding down and if elected president he would withdraw at once from Viet Nam.


Darwin F Milis, Blackwell Street, Kaukauna, an employee of Thilmany Pulp and Paper was fatally injured in an industrial accident Wednesday when he was caught between two rolls of paper on one of the mill’s paper machines.

Roger G. Vanden Heuvel (right), formerly of Kaukauna, received an honorable discharge at the Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. Vanden Heuvel served 21 years of service in the U.S. Navy.

Miss Jeanne M. Winter, Hennes Ct., Kaukauna, recently enlisted in the Navy. The new WAVE, currently a senior at Kaukauna High School, orders for active duty has been delayed until after she graduates from high school.

 

Navy seaman apprentice Bruce L. Rott, West Wisconsin Ave, has graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. A 1971 graduate of Kaukauna High School, he is scheduled to report to Hospital Corps School, San Diego, California.

There is a school board meeting on Monday March 28, 2022.  at 5:30 at the high school.  Public participation is right away after the pledge of allegiance.  It is the only time the public is allowed to speak.  You do not have to stay for the rest of the meeting.
