Seeking donations for the Thousand Islands
Environmental Center the center committee has instructed naturalist Lee Hammen
to put together a list of items needed by the center. Topping the list would be
insulating the restrooms, a large aquarium and a displace case for the large
number of arrowheads.
Rev. Edward N. Haessly, funeral services for
Rev. Edward N. Haessly, 74, formally of Kaukauna will be held today at Holy
Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna. Father Haessly was ordained on June 1,1933 and
was the first parishioner from Holy Cross to be ordained. He said his first
Mass at Holy Cross Church. Father Haessly died March 1 at a hospital in
Manitowoc.
March 4, 1982
During a lively “town hall” session in
Appleton, Gov. Lee Dreyfus Wednesday explained his plan to temporarily increase
the state’s sale tax to clear a state deficit and, in the future, to use the
extra funds to offset property taxes.
March 9, 1982
Josh Renkens of Kaukauna has qualified for the
Nationals in the Elk’s Hoop Shoot free throw shooting contest.
The proposal to close the Fox Locks come
basically because the Fox operation is authorized for commercial operations and
that volume is at zero according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
Norbert Jackels and his wife Sally, who has a
farming operation southeast of Kaukauna has been named the 1982 Farmer of the
Year.
March 11, 1982
Gregg Curry has become associated with the law firm
of McCarty, Curry, Wydeven, Peeters & Riester. Curry graduated from the
University of Wisconsin Law School in December of 1981 and joined the firm in
January.
The Board of Education voted not to extend
contracts to 24 teachers in the Kaukauna School System. Declining enrollments
and a $250,000 spending reduction demand by the Fiscal Control Board were the
main reasons.

Gubernatorial candidate Anthony Earl has laid
the blame for state fiscal problems on the way that he says Gov. Lee S. Dreyfus
took Wisconsin from its largest surplus in history to its largest deficit.
Corey VanDera, 10-year-old fifth grader at Haen
school in Kaukauna, bowled a 240 game and a 520 series recently in the Junior
Bowling League at the Bowling Bar.
Holy Cross held its first Career Day for
students grades 1 through 8. The students were introduced to a variety of
professions. Those sharing their expertise were Ken Heid, meat service; Dr.
Stephen Dreier, chiropractor; Sergeant Robert Zimmerman, policeman; Stanley
Dercks, fireman; Reginald Vande Hey, postman; Mrs. Sally Geenen, nurse; Dr.
Gregory Russo, dentist; Clarence O’Connor, lawyer, Florence Brewster,
secretary; Mark Kobin, pharmacist; Mike Weaver, banker; and Joan Cleveland,
city clerk.
Alan D. Thiede has been appointed the
position of Assistant Vice President at the F&M Bank in Kaukauna according
to bank President Gail E. Janssen.
March 23, 1982
Jim Viaene, a former Kaukauna High School Wrestler, took second place and all-American honors for the University of Wisconsin Superior in the NAIA wrestling tournament.
Even as imports of consumer goods into the U.S. are rising, sales of such items as American made machine tools still hold a heavy share of the items sold all over the globe. Giddings & Lewis of Kaukauna has a network of salespeople in several nations to handle the company’s sales.
William F. Appleton Jr., a lieutenant with
the Kaukauna Police Department, has received his Bachelor of Science degree at
Milton College where he majored in criminal justice.
March 25, 1982
Halting any further cutbacks in city services
while trying to turn the local economy around in the name of the game for the
next year or so, and Tom Schaffer and Ron Van De Hey, mayoral candidates on the
April ballot, appear to agree that to do so will take a conservative outlook.
Josh Renkens, 9-year-old from Kaukauna, with his third-place
plaque that he won at the National Elks Hoop Shoot free throw shooting
competition. The event was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Josh sank 23 of 25
shots at the basket.
