March 1, 1952
Roseanne Van Lanen,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Van Lanen, who will graduate this year with an
outstanding scholastic record and extracurricular record, has been named the
winner of the DAR award at Wrightstown High School.
March 5, 1952
The Kaukauna high school cagers wound up their
1951-52 Northeastern Wisconsin conference Friday evening in the local gym with
a 65-49 win over the New London Bulldogs thus earning a tie for 6th place in
the standings with Two Rivers.
March 7, 1952
Three students from Kaukauna
were awarded their degrees by the University of Wisconsin. They were John L.
Brenzel, Elroy J. Peters and Richard J. Mc Grath.
Building in Kaukauna was on the upswing during
1951 as an estimated $495,733 in building permits were issued by the city
building inspector during the year.
Two Kaukauna soldiers serving on the frontlines
in Korea received a pleasant surprise recently in the person of a former school
chum. As private Richard Roberts was writing a letter his attention was
diverted to a soldier who just walked into the tent taking a second look
Roberts discovered it was Sergeant Hein thus a happy reunion that followed. The
men are serving about 80 miles apart.
March 12, 1952
Miss Camilla Kostka, E. Main street,
Little Chute graduated from Eastern Stewardess school, Miami, Florida. She is
currently employed with Eastern Air Lines.
The start of
construction of the proposed community hospital in Kaukauna may not be more
than a year off, according to an announcement made by Dr. George Boyd, general chairman-
of the hospital committee.
March 14, 1952
The Legion and VFW
expressed complete satisfaction with the success of Kaukauna’s first Home Show.
Some of the members who worked in the program were: Dr. Joseph Klau, Mark
Romenesko, Clifford Woods, Jerry Huss entertainment; Fred Mason, Frank
Mitchler, William Woods, Charles Egan, Robert Pankratz, general chairman of the
project.
Plans have been submitted by the Wisconsin
highway Commission for the blacktop paving of Crooks Ave. in the city of
Kaukauna.
March 19, 1952
Visitors at the open house at Nicolet school included some
of the sisters from neighboring St. Mary’s. They are Sister M. Beata, Sister M.
Brendan and Sister M. Gabriella. Others are Mrs. Clarence Boyle, Rev. and Mrs.
Robert L. Rock and daughter Linda of Bethany Lutheran church. Miss Mary Landreman,
principal of Nicolet.
Charles Egan has been named post commander of Electric City Post No. 3319 during a meeting held last Tuesday evening at the VFW clubhouse.
Betsy Brenzel, president of the junior class, has
been chosen by the faculty to attend Badger Girls State. The group will be meeting
at the University of Wisconsin from June 24th to July 1st.
Women applicants for enlistment in the U. S. Marine
corps, all of whom formerly had to be high school grads, are now eligible upon
successful completion of a GED test. Young women aged 18 to 30 years, may
enlist in the Marine Corps for periods up either three or four years.
The 1951-52 Galloping Ghost cagers set a school
scoring record for the third year in concession with 1063 points in a 20 game
or better season mark.
March 26, 1952
Three sisters in matching red corduroy suits made by their
mother. Patsy 4, Janet 6, and Mary Ann 8, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin
Vanevenhoven.
Three bloodhounds belonging to Kaukauna’s Joseph
Lehrer, a deputy, and Lieutenant Jack Zuelzke of the Outagamie County Sheriff's
Department were not able to pick up the trail of three children lost in the
woods near Lakewood last weekend. Drifting snow and continued storms before the
bloodhounds were called to the scene made it impossible for the dogs to find the
trail.
Kaukauna’s newest addition to its street
cleaning equipment has arrived. The white machine came by flatcar at the South
side railroad yards late Monday. It will be put into operation as soon as one
of the city employees can be trained to operate this new piece of equipment.
The machine has one huge rotating brush just in front of the rear rails and a
smaller curb brush in the front of the machine.
Major Robert Courtney, flight commander of
Flight F, 9660 UART, Kaukauna announced that word had been received from
headquarters Tenth Air Force, Michigan, that Air Force reserves is holding the
ratings are bombardier, navigator, and radar- bombardier should apply for
active duty in their specific occupational fields. He stated that the number of
officers falls short of the number required to meet the present combat crew
requirements.
March 28, 1952
Jack Hilgenberg and Paul Maes were named Tuesday as the co-captains of the Kaukauna high school basketball team during the 1951-52 season, according to an announcement made by Asher Shorey, basketball coach.

Private Frank Granberg, W. Wisconsin ave. is
attending a 17-week course at the radio school at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Pvt. Louis Warnecke and Pvt. Elaine Warnecke,
Eight street, are spending an 11-day furlough with their parents. Louis is with
the 3rd Armored division stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky and he
will now be sent to Austria. Elaine as
with the Women's Army Corps at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
Pfc. Jerome A. Benotch, 21, West 10th St, has
recently graduated from the 5th infantry division's eight-week leadership
course.
Eugene King, W. 6th St, has been recalled to
active duty with the United states Navy.
Airman Apprentice Henry F. Ebben, Joyce Street, has
completed his boot training at the US Naval Training Center, Great lakes, Ill.
and is currently stationed at Jacksonville, Florida.
Richard J Borree, seaman apprentice, U S N, E.
8th St, has temporarily left his ship the USS Arcadia and has reported to the Fleet
Training Center, Newport R. I. for a course in the Combat Information Center.
Sergeant First Class Clifford O. Fischer is
currently spending a 30-day furlough with his parent’s route 2 Kaukauna.
Fischer spent the past ten months with the US Army in Korea.
Private Joseph L. Gerrits, Kaukauna, has
graduated from the 5th Armored Division's foodservice school.
Richard Wippich, route 1 Kaukauna and Raymond
Baril, route 3 Kaukauna, have recently enlisted in the US army for a 2-year
term. Both the enlistees are 19 years old.
James Driessen, Sarah St, enlisted in the United
States Air Corps for four years. He left Tuesday for Milwaukee and on Thursday
for Texas where he'll take his basic training.
Private Marvin H Whitman, Foerster ave, left
the states for duty somewhere overseas.
Private Leo J. Gerrits, route 3, Kaukauna, is
home on a 15-day furlough from Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Upon completion of his
furlough, he will report to Seattle, Washington.
Pfc. James E. McMorrow, W. Wisconsin ave., has arrived
in Korea. He is with the First Marine Division.
Bernard G. Bowers,
route 2, Kaukauna, is undergoing recruit training at the US Naval Training Base
Great Lakes, Illinois.
Private William Vander Loop, Maria St, has
recently been sent to Japan with the 24th Infantry Division after serving a six-month
tour of service in Korea.
Pvt. Richard Roberts, West Wisconsin ave., who
is serving in Korea has been transferred to Btry. C 780 Field Artillery.
Pvt. David L. George, Taft st., is currently
taking his basic training at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Cpl. Donald J. Golden, E. 8th
street, is expected home this weekend for a 30-day furlough. He served 20
months in Guam with an ordnance company.
Pfc. Ralph Stroetz, Lawe street, has been
promoted to corporal. He is stationed at Fitzsimons, Army Hospital, Denver,
Colorado.
