April 1, 1942

 

L. C. Smith, the commander of the civilian defense corps for Kaukauna and the town of Buchanan, stated that at least 1000 registrants are needed for civilian defense work.

 

George R. Greenwood and Walter H. Roloff have been appointed as assistants to Commander L. C. Smith in the civilian defense corps.


Ed G. Haas is chief of the auxiliary fire and police organized under the civilian defense program.

Leo H. Schmalz, top, is chief of the air raid wardens and Harold H. Frank is serving as the chief assistant. 


Sea Gull Patrol first aid team of St. Mary’s troop 27 won an A rating in the Fox River Valley council first aid contest held Friday evening. Members of the team are Jerry Derus, patrol leader, Bill Landreman, Charles Pontius, Roy Bouche, and B. Hooyman.


The month of April will mark the first anniversary of the opening of the Kaukauna NYA workshop. At the present time the Kaukauna defense training program has expanded to be one of the biggest and best in the state of Wisconsin with most of the shops operating 24 hours a day.


Employees of the Thilmany Pulp and Paper company have signed up 100 per cent for the purchase of defense stamps and bonds through pay roll deduction according to L. C. Smith, personnel director.

Bill Van Dyke was unanimously elected captain to lead the 1942-43 cagers, coach Guy Krumm, announced Tuesday.


April 3, 1942

Lewis F. Nelson was elected mayor in Tuesday’s election, defeating George C. Egan. Nelson polled 1376 votes and Egan 972.

 

All physicians in Wisconsin will be sent a questionnaire requesting detailed data on his age, experience, and training, which will be used to determine his usefulness and assignment when he is summoned for war service.

 

Youthful patriots, men 18 and 19 years old, are needed in the rapidly expanding army of the United States. These men are exempt from the draft but many sensing the necessity of everyone to doing his part have volunteered. Many of these men are looking upon the army as a career, knowing that they will have little difficulty obtaining a noncommissioned officers rating with pay of $125 a month.


Wisconsin Governor Hale, complying with the request of the President of the United States, to conserve rubber, automobiles, and gasoline, ordered the reducing the speed at which motor vehicles are operated.


The Miller High Life bowling team won three games on the last evening of bowling resulting in a first-place tie. Members of the team are Don Farrell, Ray Morgan, John Halaska, Carl Ploetz and Mark Nagan. 


April 10, 1942

War Production Director Nelson, speaking in New York city, said America's industrial plant is really beginning to roll. He said airplane production schedules for the first three months of this year have been met or exceeded and production of tanks is ahead of schedule.

 

Valedictorian Lois Seggelink has the highest scholastic achievement of the high school senior class according to an announcement made yesterday afternoon by Olin G. Dryer, principal. Lois maintained an average of 95.052 for her four-year course in Kaukauna High School.

 

April 17, 1942

The Combined Locks Paper company employees, 455 in number, have signed up 100% for the payroll allotment plan for the purchase of war savings bonds.


Hugo Lemke was elected commander of Electric City Post 3319 Veterans of Foreign Wars at the regular meeting held Tuesday evening in the clubhouse on Lawe Street. 


April 22, 1942

Captain Bill Mitchler will don the gloves for the Kaws for the last time. When the Kaukauna High School boxing team meets St. John’s Little Chute tonight. In the 108-pound division, Mischler has won 21 fights, lost 1and had fought to 3 draws in the four years of competition. 

 

A near capacity crowd of boxing fans saw the Kaukauna High School squad up St. John’s of Little Chute in the local gym Friday night by a score of 6 1/2 to 3 1/2 in the final card of the season.


April 24, 1942

Alderman Oscar W. Alger was elected president of the common council meeting Tuesday.


Jack Roberts, junior, who fought in the 124-pound division, is captain of the 1943 high school boxing squad. Roberts was unanimously elected by his teammates. The new captain won eleven straight fights this year for the best record of any man on the team.


April 26, 1942

A total of 902 men from 44 to 64 years of age inclusive registered in the fourth draft registration at the council chambers of the municipal building Saturday.
