April 1, 1982
Matt Welhouse set a new school record at Kaukauna High School by clearing 6-feet, 6 2/3 inches in the high jump at Manitowoc track meet last week.
A parent support group will begin at Kaukauna
high school on Tuesday April 13th and run for eight consecutive Tuesdays. It is
being offered for parents experiencing serious difficulties with their teenage
children. The small group meetings will be for 1 1/2 hours to cover various
effective parenting skills.
Employees of the Kaukauna Times had the fun of
being in pictures when a movie making crew came to tape a story about the
newspaper’s recovery from the fire of last June 7th. The finishing product will
be part of an advertising promotion for the makers of the keyboard equipment
that is used in the electronic typesetting process at the Kaukauna Times. The Micro-Tek
company of Wichita, KS is the company headquarters.
Mayor Robert L LaPlante has thrown his support
behind Thomas J Schaefer in the Kaukauna race for mayor. LaPlante said “After
hearing the two candidates for mayor of the city expressing themselves it is my
opinion that Mr. Thomas Schaeffer is the best qualified candidate for this
important position.”
April 6, 1982
Corporate cash donations to the 1000 Island
Environmental Center will be set toward the purchase of a small tractor for use
in the conservancy zone. Members of the environmental committee made that
recommendation and heard a proposal for the creation of a muskie rearing pond
in the area.
April 8, 1982
Ronald L. Van De Hey became Kaukauna’s new
mayor winning by better than a 2 to 1 margin over Thomas Schaffer.
“Coach of the Year” is becoming a familiar
title to Lindy Kemp. The 1963 Kaukauna High School graduate who now coaches’
girls’ basketball has been selected to receive the honor a second time. She was
the first recipient of the annual Freeman coach of the year award at the
conclusion of the 1976-77 basketball season and again chosen this year for the
same award in recognition for her outstanding work as coach of the Brookfield East
High School Girls’ basketball team.
April 13, 1982
Ted Malkowski was picked as the Most Valuable Player
on the varsity boys basketball team at Kaukauna high school for the 1981-82
season. The 5-foot 10-inch senior guard was the leading scorer in the Fox Valley
Association and earned a spot on the second team in the all-conference voting
of the league’s coaches.
Jerry Bryant, an associate athletic director
who also coaches cross country for the boys’ and girls’ team and an assistant
track coach at Kaukauna high school, was in Madison this past week to donate a
kidney to his brother.
April 15, 1982
A wage hike of 7.6% for employees at the Heart
of Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District was approved Tuesday evening by the
district’s commission. Included in the package was an across the board $0.36
per hour hike retroactive to January 1st.
April 22, 1982
Reigning as King and Queen of the Kaukauna High
School Junior Prom this Saturday evening will be Tom Vondracek and Lisa
Pfister.
After presiding over his first, council meeting
Tuesday, Mayor Ronald Van De Hey indicated that a review of the future of the
Wisconsin Ave. lift bridge and a public meeting to discuss the city's
financials would be his first two projects.
April 27, 1982
Army Corps of Engineers personnel prepared this
week to flood the Fox River canal system for what appears to be an abbreviated
final season of navigation. Due to federal budget cutbacks, the budget for the Fox
River project office has been cut from $1.5 million to $420,000 which would
necessitate the closing of the system.
April 29, 1982
Wisconsin Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus is
firmly convinced that there should be no move to select his successor. Dreyfus announced
this week that he would not run for a second term in Madison and that he had
decided there would be no federal post on his horizon.
