June 4, 1952

 

Jack Hilgenberg Valedictorian and Salutatorian Sally Merlo of the Kaukauna High School graduating class of 1952.

 

Ken Roloff, outstanding athlete of Kaukauna High School, donned the orange and black for the last time Saturday and ended his high school athletic career with a second-place finish in the high hurdles at the WIAA state track meet in Madison. Roloff, who qualified for the meet in three events, captured sixth place in the low hurdle race, and was entered in the long jump, but failed to place. At sectionals, Roloff set a school and sectional record in that event with a leap of 21'9".

 

Summer vacation has started for many of the schoolboys of Kaukauna, and they have busied themselves with the construction of their racers for the annual Jaycee Derby Day, which is scheduled to be held here Sunday, June 22. About 20 boys from the Kaukauna area have registered to compete and this year's event.

James I. McFadden was named president of the Kaukauna Lions Club at the annual election of officers this last week.


Richard “Red” Smith, former Kaukauna sports star and present president and manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, has been named as the rally master of the annual gathering of the Kaukauna High school alumni. The event is scheduled to be held at the Nitingale ballroom on June 14.


 

June 6, 1952


Walter Rennebohm, city recreation director, has announced that the swimming pool will be open Sunday afternoon. the number system for admission to the pool by city children will again be used. Attendants at the pool are Mary Rohan, Lorena Derus, Betsy Brenzel, Barbara Little, Florence Golden, Janis Mislinski and Cecilia Ryan. Guarding the swimmers will be Gene Noonan, John Landreman, Ronald Sager, Dave Zwick, Sally Strom, and Mrs. William Van Dyke.

“Everyone his cordially invited to attend our gala grand opening which starts today and will last until Sunday evening” Leroy R. Balza, manager of Balza’s Deep Rock service station announced. The two-fold event which marks Balza’s fifth year of management of the station will also give the public an opportunity to view the many changes and improvements at the station.


June 11, 1952

Elaine Look and Marge Stokes, two Kaukauna girls, are currently on tour as part of a professional variety show that toured the United States and Europe during the last ten months. Both girls are 1950 graduates of Kaukauna High School and are considered superb roller skaters.

Elroy Hirsch, famous football star of the Los Angeles Rams and leading past receiver in professional football, will be in Kaukauna Thursday night to give a talk and show movies of the Ram-Cleveland Browns championship game of last fall. Hirsch is a hometown hero of Wausau and the University of Wisconsin.

June 18, 1952

Larry’s Super Market, 218 Main Avenue, has leased the Loyal Order of Moose building on Dodge Street and will convert it into a food supermarket. Larry Verhagen stated, “The customers did not have the shopping space they needed or would like to have.” The new building will double the floor space of the current location.


Rev. George Buchanan, newly appointed pastor of the Methodist Church conducted his first service here Sunday. The Rev. Theodore H. Runyon, who served here for the last five years, departed this morning for Racine, where he will be pastor.

 




Donald Wolf, W. 3rd St and Janet George, Lincoln Ave., were chosen as “Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher” Saturday afternoon at the third annual “Huck Finn Day, festivities sponsored by the Kaukauna Rod and Gun club. Both Don and Janet were awarded a new bicycle as more than 200 youngsters vied for the honors of the day at Reichel’s pond.


June 25, 1952

Dennis Weyenberg, 12 years old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Weyenberg, was crowned the new Derby Day champion of Kaukauna after he nosed out last year’s winner Danny Weyers, by one foot in the final race.
