October 1, 1952
Purchase was made of
the business building at the corner of Third and Main avenue, formally occupied
by Larry’s Supermarket, by C. J. Hansen publisher of the Kaukauna Times. Bee’s beauty Shop now located in the rear of
the Kavanaugh building on Second Street will move into the main part of the
structure according to Beatrice Weigman proprietor.
October 3, 1952
Berken’s Skelly Service station on 1300 Crooks avenue will
have a Grand Opening October 3-4-5. Gordy Berken says there will be gifts and
for children, free balloons, and suckers.
Wrightstown – Michael Anthony Nelessen, 16-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nelessen was struck and killed by the Green Bay to Appleton Northwestern train near his home. The child was believed to be heading to his grandparent’s home across the tracks from his house when the accident occurred. He was the only child the Nelessen’s who had lost a newborn two months ago. The engineer saw the child but was not able to stop the train in time to prevent the accident.
Four Kaukauna youths were injured in an automobile accident early Sunday morning when a car driven by Willian Grimmer, 17, lost control on a curve on Dodge Street and struck a tree. Grimmer and the other three passengers were brought to St. Elizabeth Hospital and treated to cuts and bumps. Marvin Wirth, 18, Karl Kessler, 18, and Ralph Noonen, 15, were released from the hospital on Monday afternoon.
October 10, 1952
Hugo “Butch” Van De
Yacht received the award as “King of the Schut” Sunday from Clarence Eiting,
sec. treas. of the St. Francis Society.
Van De Yacht shot down the bird in the 716th shot of the 103rd
annual Schut.
Two years ago, when the Badger Northland
Manufacturing Company moved to Kaukauna, they had started the manufacture of
barn cleaners, which are sold throughout America. After two years the
production has increased by 200 percent.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower campaign train shown
in Appleton while traveling through Wisconsin. Eisenhower is the Republican
candidate from president.
Several days ago, the Kaukauna Klub received a
thank-you letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican candidate for
president, acknowledging the cheese they sent him, stated Earl Gilling. Mr.
Gilling stated that requests for Kaukauna Klub Cheese has been received for
overseas shipments. We have completed demonstrating in the New England market
and will soon be starting in Chicago and Los Angeles market. Mr. Gilling said
that some of their advertising is in the Saturday Evening Post, The Family
Circle, Woman’s Day, Better Living, Good Housekeeping, and other media.
October 15, 1952
A new drive-in theatre
will be built on the north side of Highway 41 between Kaukauna and Little Chute
by the owners of Kaukauna’s Rialto; it was announced Tuesday by Walter Holt,
Rialto manager.
October 17, 1952
James Marvin, first male head librarian at
Kaukauna Public library took his new post on October 1.
October 22, 1952
L. C. Smith, industrial relations director at
Thilmany Mill announced yesterday pay increases for hourly paid employees. The
base rate for men is increased 2c per hour now being $1.40 per hour.
The undefeated St. Mary’s Gray Ghosts completed
their sweeping drive for the FRV Catholic Grade School conference title by
taking Holy Cross 33-14 Monday night in the annual battle for city
championship.
October 24, 1952
Fire Chief Carl
Engerson of Kaukauna announced that he will retire from the department effective
December 15th after 29 years with the city’s firefighting
crews. Carl began his term on January 21
1924 and became assistant chief in 1934.
Upon the resignation of Fire Chief Henry Esler, Engerson was appointed
to the post of Chief on April 15, 1949.
October 31, 1952
Mark Hoegh, a former Kaukauna High
School football standout, will be starting his first game of the
season as a Wisconsin Badger, after getting over pneumonia, which delayed his
early season football activities. Hoegh will be a starter in the defensive
tackle position.
This season four former
Kaukauna high school football players are in the starting lineup at Stevens
Point college. Mark Schommer end, Marty Gilbert center, Jim Giordana halfback,
and Ken Roloff end.
