October 3, 1962
Anthony J. Schlude, Kaukauna high school senior,
has been named a semi-finalist in the 1962-63 Merit Scholarship competition according
to Principal Walter Schmidt.
The Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company has
concluded negotiations with representatives of the local unions. The new labor
agreement is effective for one year for 1,200 hourly paid employees. The new rate for men is $2.13 per hour and for
women $1.81 per hour.
October 10, 1962
Jerry Waldman of Milwaukee broke the world’s speed
record for class D hydro outboards during competition last Saturday on the Fox
River at Egan’s landing. Waldman set a speed of 88.07 miles per hour. Later Waldman set a world’s record for Class C
hydro divisions with a speed of 50.382 miles per hour.
Defensive tackle Henry Jordan of the Green Bay Packers was the principal speaker at the Lions club football banquet. Jordan was joined by four Kaukauna Ghost veterans left to right Dick Promer, Tom Berghuis, Jordan, Ray Granger, and Ron Skalmusky.
The 20th
straight win for the Kaukauna Galloping Ghost football team came on a play in
the final minute of the Friday afternoon game against Kimberly at the Little
Chute gridiron. Quarterback Buddy O’Brian clutched the ball and went over for
the T.D. Perfect conversion by John Skibba gave the Kaus the 7-0 decision. The Ghosts tied a M-E record with their 20th
win. The previous 20 game record is held
by Neenah which spanned from 1955 to 1958.
Kaukauna and Neenah will lock horns this Saturday afternoon which is expected
to be its sternest test for the 1962 campaign.
The new St. Aloysius
Catholic Parochial school on the southside of Kaukauna is expected to be
completed sometime in early November.
October 19, 1962
The new city leaf
loader sucks up piles of leaves, chops them and blows the particles into a
chopper wagon. With fall in full swing
the new machine will be working overtime.
Work will begin this month on a $13,000
expansion of Little Chute telephone facilities, according to Dick Kuehn of the
telephone company. The improvement will increase the total of customers by 190 to
3,540.
October 24, 1962
Miss Ruth Van Zeeland
reigned as queen of the homecoming over the weekend. Her attendants included Miss Sara Berens,
left and Maria Alves, right. The freshman captured first place in the parade
with their “Purple Raider Eater.” The juniors constructed an oversize skunk and
proclaimed, “We Scent a Victory.”
Police Chief Harold Engerson this week issued a
warning to youngsters of the community that the Halloween willful destruction
of property will not be tolerated. No youngsters over ten years of age will be
permitted to go on “trick-or-treat “excursions.
The return of Rev. Herbert Lane, former pastor
of the Kaukauna Methodist church, from 1929 to 1933, will be among the visitors
in town for the diamond anniversary celebration of the church this Sunday.
October 31, 1962
22 Kaukauna youngsters were declared winners in
the recent funny-face pumpkin contest sponsored by the Kaukauna Chamber of Commerce
in connection with the Town-Country Homecoming promotion.
A community wide promotion of the use of seat
belts in the interest of driving safety is being launched by the Junior Chamber
of Commerce. The use of seatbelts will prevent 60 per cent of injuries in auto
accidents according to Ken Vock chairman of the Kaukauna Jaycee group.
