October 1, 1972
Outagamie
County Teachers’ College President Elmer Gordon locked the doors of the school
for the final time Friday morning.
The halls of area
schools are filled with the sounds of students in classes, discussion of
lectures and outside activities, but at one school, only silence fills the
halls. The rooms are empty of all life and the walls are bare of the plaques
and student art which once covered them. The Outagamie County Teachers College
closed its doors permanently shortly before noon, Friday, after 60 years and
more than 3,000 students.
October 4, 1972
Students in Kaukauna city schools’ number 3,585
as of September 15 of this year. This is 88 students over 1971 and 2,068 over
the 1960 enrollment according to Superintendent of Schools Julian Bichler.
A former Kaukauna High School football
standout, Dick Promer, has signed his 10th contract with the
Manitowoc County Chiefs of the Central States Football league. Promer, a 6’4’’,
240-pound offensive lineman, came to the Chiefs in 1963 after tryouts with the
Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers.
October 11, 1972
It was a fruitful week for the Kaukauna High
School volleyball squad. In addition to its third consecutive FVA title the
team again also captured its fourth tournament title of the year.
Safe
at home is how Todd Lunda plans to spend his birthday today. In addition to
being 13 on Friday the 13th he lives at 1313 Glenview Drive.
October 25, 1972
The Kaukauna American Legion Auxiliary Post No.
41 celebrated its’ 50th Anniversary this year. The auxiliary was
granted the charter on April 24, 1922. A group of legion and auxiliary members
meet on promoting the golden anniversary. Seated are Mrs. Norman Meinert,
Richard Bohm and Mrs. Oliver Wheaton. Standing are George E. Greenwood, Stanley
Lizon, and Steve Andrejeski.
October 27, 1972
Marvin Schumacher was elected President of the
Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce to fulfill the term of Dave Flanagan
who died, October 7.
A cease fire agreement has been reached in the war in Viet Nam, it was announced Thursday noon. It was disclosed that the first beak in the deadlocked negotiations came on Oct. 8, when Hanoi agreed to the principle of the cease fire.
