January 6, 1943
Patrick Carl Weigman,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Weigman, was named winner of the First Baby of
the year derby. Patrick Carl was born at 12:45 p.m. Friday, January 1 at St.
Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.
Harry E. Thompson, 86. died at his home
on 9th Street Wednesday morning. He lived in Kaukauna for nearly 60
years and operated a shoe store here until 1928 when he retired.
A fire, believed to have started from a
defective chimney, destroyed the Verkuilen Furniture store on West Main street,
Little Chute. The blaze was discovered Tuesday afternoon by a passing motorist.
The structure was considered a total loss and is estimated to $20,000.
January 8, 1943
A resolution was
unanimously adopted at the January meeting of the common council which grants
War Materials, Inc., permission to remove the imbedded street car rails from
Lawe Street and Wisconsin Avenue.
Street and park employees of the city were
granted a raise by the council at the regular January meeting held Tuesday
evening. Salaried men will receive $5 a month additional and hourly men an
additional three cents an hour increase.
January 15, 1943
J. P. Kline was re-elected
president of the Bank of Kaukauna at the annual meeting of directors held
Monday evening. Other officers re-elected were Dr. W. J. Flanagan,
vice-president, L. J. Merlo, cashier, Barbara M. Kramer, and C. H. Zastrow,
assistant cashiers.
Fire losses in the city of Kaukauna during 1942
amounted to about $4,711.83.
January 20, 1943
Lewis F. Nelson was re-elected
president of the Farmers and Merchants bank at the annual meeting of the board
of directors.
Mrs. Pearl Benedum, the first adult woman to
enroll in the war training class at the Kaukauna school of vocation is employed
as a welder at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding company. She has a son attending
Kaukauna High School.
Elby Penny, a one-armed welder, his left arm
being off below the elbow, who received his welding training at the Kaukauna
school of vocation and adult education, is working at the Manitowoc
Shipbuilding company.
January 22, 1943
Members of the fire and police departments were
granted a $5 a month additional bonus by the city fathers at Tuesday’s meeting
bringing the emergency bonus to $20.
January 27, 1943
Hugh O'Connell, formerly of Kaukauna, well known stage, and screen actor, died in Hollywood, California, Tuesday night. He was known by many in this city.
