There isn’t much doubt
about the winner of this year’s Kaukauna Merchants - Kaukauna Times Baby
Contest. Born but two hours and 45 minutes into the new year’s is Thomas Ralph
Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bowers of Kaukauna.
January 7, 1953
Sunday will be a day the veteran ice fishermen meet when the Kaukauna Rod and Gun Club holds a Fish-O-Ree on Lake Winnebago. Co-chairman Helmer Damro and Woodrow Alger said people who have never tried ice fishing before as well as veteran fisherman are welcome to combine their skill with their luck on the lake.
January 9, 1953
Vandals broke into the Little Chute Beer and
Liquor store on Main street late Tuesday night according to County policeman
Lt. Jack Zuelzke. About $18 in change was removed from the cash register. It is
believed entry was gained through the back door.
January 14, 1953
Kaukauna's part in the
1953 March of Dimes drive will get into full swing with an extensive door to
door solicitation, the first in many years, according to David Flanagan,
Kaukauna March of Dimes chairman. This year's goal is set at the $1,500 mark.
Last year's drive netted about $1,200 from the city.
Sister M. Beata’s kindergarten of St. Mary’s
school was the scene of four birthday parties last week with each celebrating their
6th birthday. Jo Ann Gerend, Gary Wierschke, Sandra Casey, and
Maureen O’Connor. Each of the guests led
the singing and dancing for the day and treats were given to each of the 53
pupils attending.

Mark Hoegh was busy
signing autographs after the reception in his honor in the high school gym.
The city of Kaukauna
honored Mark Hoegh, the Kaukauna football star who became the first from this
city to ever play in the Rose Bowl or letter at the University of Wisconsin,
last Friday, and 850 townspeople and students attended the testimonial, which
was held in the high school auditorium. Many people spoke at the program, all
holding high regards for the Kaukauna athlete. Following the speeches, Hoegh
received a standing ovation from the large crowd. Hoegh, touched by the
ovation, said, "Thanks from the bottom of my heart to the people of the
greatest little city in the world. There aren't enough words in the dictionary
to tell you how I really feel."
The construction of the addition to the
Kaukauna High school was slowed last week when the excavation struck the
foundation of the old Opera House on Oak street.
Girls nominated by their teachers for the DAR award are
Mary Verhagen, Elizabeth Brenzel
Joan Van Zeeland, Sharon Doering,
Muriel Feldkamp
Yvonne Borree.
The senior class will vote for three out of the six on Monday.
