Ed Matchett, long time Kaukauna
tavern owner, died yesterday after a short illness. Ed ran a grocery store on
Hendricks Avenue for eight years.
Following this he operated a tavern on the corner of Third Street and
Main Ave. for 29 years prior to his retirement in 1962.
May 8, 1963
A crowd of two hundred
persons feted Gen Anderson, retired assistant postmaster, Saturday with a
program in her honor at the Elks Club.
Calvin Spice, 38, of Kaukauna, today announced his candidacy
for Sheriff of Outagamie County on the Democratic ticket. Spice has been a
police officer for the past 14 1/2 years, serving as on the Outagamie County Police
Force for the past nine years and as an officer with the Kaukauna Police
Department for 5 ½ years prior to that.
May 17, 1963
Signing of the contract
for the new Kaukauna Area Veterans Memorial took place this week. Standing
Jerome Huss and Olin G. Dryer, committee members. Seated Arthur Kromer Sr. and
Clarence Sullivan committee chairman.
Petitions are being
circulated for the repeal of a law banning the display of merchandise on the sidewalks.
In an effort to protest the present law, Haas Hardware has set up a display of
lawnmowers in the street.
May 29, 1963
Miss Kathryn Ann Eslien, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Eslien, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin was one of the
finalists in the 1963 "Alice and Dairyland" contest held in Manitowoc
in June.
