Gen. Geo. Custer

A monument which is to be erected on the spot where the massacre of Gen. Custer and his command occurred in 1876 is being carved out of native granite at Montello.

Straw hats are a specialty at John Hoberg's.

A lively scene transpired in the courtroom at Racine on the 20th. During the trial of Dr. Wm. Mink, charged with being the father of Mary Albrecht’s child. Dr. Mink was giving his testimony which was unfavorable to the girl, when she charges down upon him and proceeded to give him a general overhauling, pulling his hair and whiskers and beating him in the face. After an absence of twenty minutes the juries returned a verdict of guilty.

Two Mackinaw fishing boats arrived from Lake Winnebago at the first lock in this village last Saturday morning being bound for Green Bay. As the canal below the first lock was not yet ready for navigation, the fishermen were obliged to take their boats "overland" as far as Wrightstown.

A Pennsylvania lady has an egg which she claims is 106 years old. She is saving it for Oscar Wilde when he makes his first appearance on the stage in this country.

Some unknown persons have commenced defacing the new bridge. It is a pity that some of the wretches who delight in destroying or injuring public property cannot be captured. One or two examples of this kind would quiet the rest.

The Kaukauna band gave a street serenade last Monday evening on the corner of 2nd Street and Main Ave. The boys continue to improve in their playing and are fast becoming one of the best bands in the state.

A species of "side-walk boom" seems to have struck our villages. The town board recently decided to build a new walk from the draw bridge to the N.W. depot. The walk will be built as to do away with as much as possible the number of "steps" which are such a nuisance in the present walk. One by one, the streets of Kaukauna are being graveled, and soon the city will have a fine set of graveled streets by which to travel will be much easier.

The Main street across the island is receiving a thick coat of gravel. From the present outlook, it will soon be in better condition than any other street in the village; Geo. Kelso has the graveling contract and is doing first-class work. The material comes from the tailrace of the Kelso Pulp Mill.

New sidewalks are constantly being added and replaced in this village, doing away with the problems involved when traveling by foot throughout Kaukauna and Ledyard. These new walks and improvements are definitely a convenience to the citizens and are helping this town progress.
