April 4, 1973
Kaukauna police officers are investigating a
number of instances in which windows were damaged by gunfire on Sunday evening.
The most violence occurred was at Deering’s Super Value where eight plate glass
windows were struck by shots, and flying glass injured three people, none of
them seriously. The gunfire reported at 10:45 PM appeared to come from a
passing truck headed west on Sarah St. The bullets were surmised to have been a
22-caliber type.
The Wisconsin State division of motor vehicles has
reminded motorists that Sunday, April 1st. is the deadline for the
removal of studded snow tires in Wisconsin.
April 6, 1973
Reverend John De Wilde, former pastor of Saint Paul's Catholic Church Combined Locks, was honored on his 92nd birthday anniversary April 2. Friends stop by throughout the day to visit Rev. De Wilde at the Saint Paul home, where he now resides.
April 11, 1973
Stormy weather with visibility reduced to a
minimum visited the area causing drifting and snow clogged streets in town.
Aviation Maintenance Administration Airman
George Greenwood has been named Reconnaissance Attack Squadron Five’s “Sailor
of the Month” for the month of March. Commander H. L. Klein presented Airman
Greenwood with a letter of commendation in a ceremony aboard the aircraft
carrier USS Ranger. Airman Greenwood is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George
Greenwood 11th Street Kaukauna.
Snow or no snow, the second annual Raider All-Sports
ball will be held this Friday, April 13 at Van Abel’s in Hollandtown. Last year
75 former Raiders attended the ball. Raiders Coach Bob Wurdinger said that the
number could double this year. Some of the guests came from as far away as 300
miles and the ball brings many old Raiders that are now in college home for the
weekend.
April 13, 1973
No need to ask Jodi Wurdinger, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Wurdinger, how she enjoyed the spaghetti at the 1973 Holy Cross
Athletic Banquet last Thursday night. The expression on her face tells the
whole story.
Joseph Shoes and Sew ‘n Sew Fabrics will move
from their present location into the former Luedtke 5c to $1 Store building on
Wisconsin Ave., it was announced Thursday by Joseph Vanderloop, proprietor.
April 18, 1973
Kaukauna police officers are investigating the
theft of a large amount of cash and checks from a north side clothing store
Friday evening. A report by Donald Grissman, operator of the Bottom Half, on
Wisconsin Ave. said that he found that $900 in cash and checks were missing
from the cash drawer Friday evening. A clerk at the store said there was at
least one customer while she was at work and that the money was found missing
by Grissman when he returned.
April 20, 1973
The general discussion of the relocation of
Hwy. 55 has been scheduled for Monday by Outagamie county highway commissioner.
The discussion will center on a proposed change in the highway’s location from
the present route through Kaukauna to a different route which would take it west
of the city near the Electa Quinney school and northwesterly toward Sanitorium
road.
A plaque with an inscribed gavel was presented
to retiring Alderman George Simon (center0 as he attended his last Common
Council meeting after 19 years of service. The presentation was made by James
McDaniel on the left and Mayor Robert LaPlante.
April 25, 1973
Dr. Alphons E. Bachhuber, Kaukauna physician for 38 years, died at the age of 70 early Monday afternoon of a long illness. Dr. Bachhuber had retired two years ago. His course was set in medicine early in life as his father was a doctor and he followed in his footsteps.
A 10-year-old Kaukauna boy remains hospitalized
in Appleton after he was struck by a bus Saturday morning shortly before noon.
Reports indicate that Robert Lauer was riding his bicycle down the hill in
front of the Kaukauna swimming pool, and rode onto Dodge St. into the path of a
Kaukauna bus service driven by Raymond W. Feick. The boy was treated at the
scene then sent to the hospital. He remains in intensive care. Feick was not
charged in the mishap.
April 27, 1973
44 young performers will take the stage at the Kaukauna
civic Auditorium Sunday night as Kaukauna Recreation Department presents its
18th annual dance review. The program “Joy to the World” was put together by Mrs.
Pat Kloehn and Mrs. Lois Schommer, the KRD dance teachers.
Bob Skoronski, a steadfast performer, and offensive
tackle of the Green Bay Packers will be the featured speaker at the 7th annual
KHS All Sports and Hall of Fame Banquet Saturday night in the school’s
cafeteria.
Rep. William Rogers - A crowd estimated at
2500 packed the state capital at Madison to express their views and hear
discussion on one of the most controversial issues ever to hit the state's
political scene. The hearing before the assembly committee was thought to be
the largest ever held in the history of the state according to representative
William Rogers of Kaukauna. The bills deal with the Wisconsin abortion laws.
