April 7, 1893

A government steamer took a run down the river here last Saturday. The whistle sounded quite summer-like. Navigation will soon be declared open.


Mayor Peter Reuter, in Tuesday's election, stepped into office once again and will serve as the city's mayor for another term, his third.

 

New Tramp Law – A bill which is intended as a remedy for the tramp nuisance was passed recently in the assembly. The district attorney is required to prosecute all cases. Any person convicted a second time in a year shall be punished by imprisonment by the state for not more than one year or less than three months. 

The Town of Galena, Del., was practically wiped out by fire on March 31.  200 houses were totally destroyed, and several persons severely burned while fighting the fire. No lives were lost.

 

Fond du Lac is in darkness owing to the expiration of one company’s street lighting franchise. This is not the first time that old Fondy has been in darkness. A dark cloud has hung over her for many years.

 

A Holyoke, Mass., man claims to have a tricycle constructed by himself on which he and his wife carry their two children, a tent, and an oil stove. On this machine the family are to tour to the World's fair.

 

By the fastest train it will only require 19 hours to go from New York to Chicago during the world's fair.  This means very close to 50 miles an hour of running time and for the distance is the best in the world.

 

April 14. 1893

It is claimed that Mrs. Nellie Boycourt, who was adjudged insane in Indianapolis was made so by the use of cigarettes of which she was a confirmed smoker.

Mob Changed Its Mind – Salina, Kas., April 11 – John Hudson, the Negro arrested for the assault on Mrs. J. M. Frosts, was taken from the jail by a mob last night, a rope placed around his neck, and he was hastened to the National Hotel, where Mrs. Frost was living. She positively identified him as her assailant and the mob took him to the street. He was given a chance to speak and protested his innocence. He was told to prepare for death. At this point a number of citizens began to protest and the sentiment grew so strong in favor of Hudson that the proceedings were stopped. He was finally returned to the jail.

 

Quite a number from Kaukauna are at presently employed in construction of the building at the World's Fair in Chicago.

 

To Open The Fair – President Cleveland will touch off the world's fair on May 1 in the presence of from 100,000 to 150,000 people.

 

April 10 – A British cruiser has seized a ship flying French colors and having on board 60 children which have been kidnapped from Zanzibar by Arabs and eventually intended to be disposed of as slaves. The incident will be used to enforce the protest of the British against the course of the French authorities permitting the use of the French flag by the Arabs in kidnapping and making the French flag a cover for slave traffic.

 

Bennie Whitman was thrown out a Runte’s delivery wagon on Monday and sustains injuries which will keep him in the house for a few days. He was riding on the back of the wagon and his leg got caught in the wheel carrying him around the axle and bruising him considerably.


Luther Lindauer, of this city, returned last Saturday from the south with a carload of horses 17 in number he has disposed of most of them this week.

 

Too many men tried to pull themselves out of trouble with a corkscrew.

 

Louisville, Ky., April 5 – At the Allen Bradley distillery today, while four men were placing a barrel of whisky in a warehouse the head of the barrel broke, and the contents ran along the floor to a lighted lantern and took fire. In an instant the warehouse was in blaze and the men fled for their lives. The building was soon a roaring furnace. Barrel after barrel of whiskey exploded sending flames high in the air. Over 12,000 barrels of whiskey and 7000 cattle were lost. 

 

April 21, 1893

 By a unanimous vote of the council Tuesday evening, the Moffett, Hodgkin, Dark Company water works ordinance was ordered to a final publication before adoption. The ordinance will be adopted the first meeting in May, without a doubt, and then the water works is a sure thing. This is a glorious day for Kaukauna.

 

The Kaukauna water works are to be built by a New York firm at the cost of $76,000.

 

April 28, 1893

Last week we acquired 1.11 inches of rain, but the farmers are not deterred and are proceeding with their spring plowing.

 

The Indian school on the Oneida reservation was regularly organized on March 27 number of pupils enrolled is 75 the first day 50 were admitted. It had been necessary to refuse admittance that 30 or 40 applicants for lack of room.

Chicago, Ill., April 25 – The bronze monument of Christopher Columbus erected at the world’s Columbian exhibition on the lakefront was unveiled this afternoon with appropriate ceremonies. 

 

Plans are being drawn up by architect Dean of Appleton for new rectory to be built this season by the Holy Cross church. The building will be a handsome two-story structure fully equipped with heating apparatus etc. The cost will be in the neighborhood of $5000.

 

John Holberg of Kaukauna has been granted a patent for a new holder for toilet paper rolls. The improvement over other holders of this kind are embraced in the core which passes through the roll. In all other holders the roll can be removed from the hanger at any time, thus often resulting in a loss of paper by theft.

 

When Gen. O.O.  Howard was in Chattanooga the other day when a beggar with a withered arm came to him asking for alms. The general, with a twinkle in his eye, held out his empty sleeve said: “You’re better off than I am, for you have your arm left while I have lost mine.” The cripple gazed at the empty sleeve for a moment then extracted 15 cents from the pocket of his tattered jean trousers, “Here” he said turning to Gen. Howard; “this is all I’ve got but you’re welcome to it.” There was a general laugh at the expense of the distinguished commander of the department of the east and he made the man happy by giving him a silver dollar.
