The new paper machine
at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company produced its first web of paper last week,
and currently is undergoing numerous tests. No. 13 paper machine marks the
completion of a $10 million plant improvement and expansion program.
April 5, 1963
Fred Reuter, of Kaukauna, chalked
up the first perfect bowling score in the history of the Knights of Columbus
league in Kaukauna. The 300 score was the first one for Reuter and according to
loop secretary, Bill Blenke, every one of his shots were right in the pocket
with all the pins flying.
Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon
called upon the Kaukauna Police department at the council meeting to assist in
solving a long-standing problem of the city. The mayor asked the police to take
a count of the Main Avenue crossing being blocked by Chicago and Northwestern
Railroad cars and to note the amount of time involved and the train number. Not
only is traffic backed up for blocks at a time but both police and fire
emergency vehicles are stopped. The mayor questioned the accuracy of the 10-minute
law the state allows for blocking traffic and many times the road is blocked
for longer times.
Three Kaukauna juniors
have been selected to attend the 22nd Annual Badger Girls State at
Madison in June. Sharon Chamness, Kitty Collins, and Teri Jurgensen were
selected by the faculty on the basis of outstanding qualifications of the
students, such as leadership, courage, honor, loyalty, and service.
April 10, 1963
The Kaukauna Galloping
Ghost volleyball team lost their first game of the State tournament then won
the next two to finish fifth in the finals.
Twenty-one KHS students
received straight A’s for the third-nine week period. Thirty students qualified
for the average A honor roll.
April 12, 1963
Joseph Schuh was
elected commander of the Kaukauna Electric City Post 3319 of the VFW at the unit’s
annual election held Tuesday. Schuh succeeds Roland Geurts to the office.
April 17, 1963
David Hartjes was
recently elected president of the Kaukauna Rotary club succeeding Leo Schmaltz.
Mark Nagan was named vice president while D. J. Bordini was elected secretary
and Luther Kemp treasurer.
Mrs. John Mau, Jr., was named president of the
Kaukauna Jaycettes at a recent meeting.
April 19, 1963
Open house was held
Saturday and Sunday at the new Fargo Funeral Home at Depot Street and Wisconsin
Avenue.
Alderman Earl Luedke was elected president of
the new common council at the first meeting of that body held Tuesday evening.
Miss Rhonda Trettin
will be among the performers appearing in Sunday’s ballet production of the “Snow
Queen”. Sponsored by the Kaukauna Jaycees.
April 24, 1963
Anthony Schlude had qualified as a
National Merit Finalist, and recently announced by the corporation is being
honored with a letter of recommendation praising his scholastic ability.
Two young women from
Kaukauna, Miss Nancy Morgan, and Miss Joanne Kappell, have been named semi-finalists
in the annual Miss Appleton contest according to a recent release from the
junior Chamber of Commerce of Appleton sponsors of the pageant.
1963 Junior Prom,
senior representatives Gary Schwalenberg and Ruth Van Zeeland; sophomore
representatives are Wayne Steinbach and Nancy Tatro. Freshman representatives are
Mark Nussbaum and Patricia Landreman.
