The biggest Sturgeon
ever to be discovered in the state was found in a state of exhaustion on the
north bank of the third locks. The fish tipped the scales at 260 pounds.
Conservation wardens were contacted last night by phone and said only that
sturgeons have been known to attempt the journey up the Fox River to
spawn...enough of this. Certainly, readers know by now that today is the
opening day of the fishing season and April fool’s Day.
Kaukauna citizens have through Friday to visit
one of the city’s three new automatic voting machines to receive instructions
on their operations. Three of the 12 machines to be used by the city next
Tuesday.
Fourteen area men were part of the 33-men draft
which left for induction at Milwaukee from Outagamie County according to the
selective service board. Leaving Kaukauna were James A. Simon, Robert Grogan,
Norbert Evers and Gerald Vanden Heuvel. From Little Chute are Herald P.
Arnoldussen, Richard Cotnoir, Jerome Van Asten, William Vander Loop, Sylvester
Vanden Hogen, Clyde Lemke, Arthur Pennings, Jr., and Orville Evers. Two men from Kimberly are Everett Rooyakkers
and Vernon Schuh.
Gerald Lopas has been named a member of the
Kaukauna police force according to Police Chief H. V. Engerson.
April 8, 1953
Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company announced Tuesday the completion of the main item of the $12,000,000 modernization program-the No. 11 paper machine has gone into operation. The block-long giant stands beside its running mate, No. 9, another Beloit Stationary Fourdrinier machine, built twelve years ago in the lower mill.
April 10, 1953
The Kaukauna city
police force has acquired two new officers in as many weeks. The latest
addition is Charles Arnold, who began his duties on Monday as a replacement for
Officer Lester Luedtke, who tendered his resignation in March.
Thomas Hilgenberg and James Schlude
were the two boys chosen in an election held Friday to attend Badger Boys State
at Ripon college this summer.
April 15, 1953
Eugene De Groot, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis De Groot, has been chosen by the Barth Accordion School, Fond du Lac to put on a baton twirling act for their concert April 22. Eugene will twirl single and flag baton.

Mislinski - William West will be presented with silver
medals. They are the four Kaukauna high school students who took part in the
state forensic contest held on April 11th in Madison.
April 17, 1953
Eleven area man were inducted in the 30-man
draft which left yesterday morning for induction at Milwaukee according to the
Outagamie selective board. From Kaukauna are James Terry, Melvin Stephens,
Francis Gerow, Mark Golden, William McGinnis, Bernard Weyers. and Orville
Green. From Little Chute William Verhagen and David Bowers, from Kimberly
Thomas Van Elzen.
April 24, 1953
Sergeant Oscar Jahns of the city police force
swore in the members of the Holy Cross safety patrol at a ceremony at the
school on Wednesday morning. Sergeant Jahns, who supervises safe patrols in all
of the Kaukauna schools had high praise for all the members of the Holy Cross
safety patrol.
The Fox River navigation company’s season
officially opened on Friday having received the government go ahead when the
companies two tugboats moved through the Kaukauna locks. According to James Bambery of the navigation
company, full-time operations are now expected to continue throughout the
season.
