April 5, 1923
The Farmers and
Merchants bank moved into its new location in the Central Block, which was
purchased from John Stevens of Appleton, and thoroughly renovated from top to
bottom. The formal opening and a housewarming will take place Saturday. The
public is welcome.
Otto Look will move his drug store from the corner of Third and Main Avenue to the storeroom adjoining the Farmers and Merchants Bank on Second Street. Otto has recently sold his corner to the First National Bank.
Frederick Steffen, who had reached the
age of 97 years, died Sunday evening. Mr. Steffen was the oldest inhabitant of
this city. He was born in Germany in 1826 and came to this country in 1849.
April 12, 1923
Two Moonshiners,
arrested here two weeks ago by Sheriff Zuehike, drew jail sentences of thirty
days. Another man paid a $100 fine for possession of moonshine.
Just one hour before
she died, the world’s greatest actress Sarah Bernhardt, sent a message
to America. “I am deeply touched with the sympathetic interest of my beloved
American friends” Sarah was seventy-eight years old.
Chief “Old Posey,” of the Paiute Indians is
making his last stand, all alone, against the white man in the hills of Utah.
His small band of twenty-seven warriors was captured but he escaped. J. Ray
Ward is in charge of the men who captured the warriors and will bring in the
old chief.
Complaints are coming
daily to the Police Department from property owners who do not want their
neighbors' chickens in their yards. There is an ordinance against chickens
running at large. Lock them up to avoid arrests and fines.
April came on the stage of action with a fine
rain last week which made short work of the snow which disappeared over night
except on Second Street which had huge snowdrifts, the authorities believing in
letting the spring rains clear the street.
The South Kaukauna Creamery was found to be on
fire early Tuesday morning by a passerby. He immediately sent in an alarm to
the fire department which in a short time had the fire under control. Owner
Hubert Fassbender appeared on the scene to survey the damage. The operation of
the creamery suffered no interference but carried on as usual.
A Kaukauna girl, aged about eighteen, is
reported to have played fast and loose with silk dresses, lace, and diamonds in
Appleton, taking what did not belong to her. Appleton police have her in
custody.
April 26, 1923
The city has a crew of
men at work on the former city hall which was presented recently by the city
council to the Kaukauna Post of the American Legion and the remodeling of the
building so as to make it convenient as a clubhouse and assembly hall.
The Combined Locks Paper company has purchased
the Peter Berghuis farm comprising one hundred and thirty acres near the mill.
Among the changes which will result is a viaduct being put across the railroad
tracks thus rendering the highway safe from railroad accidents.
